Oak Mountain, Spain Park named among nation's best by Newsweek

Oak Mountain and Spain Park High Schools were named among the best 2,000 public high schools in the nation by Newsweek and The Daily Beast websites in their recently released annual rankings.

Seven other high schools in the Birmingham metro area were selected. Oak Mountain was ranked number 578 and Spain Park number 613 on the list. Other area schools named were the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School, Mountain Brook, Vestavia, Homewood, Ramsey and Hewitt Trussville.

The rankings were based on six factors: graduation rate (25 percent); college acceptance rate (25 percent); the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advance International Certificate of Education exams taken per student in the school (25 percent); average SAT/ACT test scores (10 percent); average scores on the AP, IB and AICE exams (10 percent); and percent of students enrolled in at least one AP, IB or AICE course (5 percent).
