On Oct. 25, Oak Mountain Elementary School unveiled its Vulcan statue that had been months in the making.

OMES was the first public school to be selected to host a Vulcan statue as part of the Vulcans on Parade, a project which began in 2015 from Project Corporate Leadership.

The Vulcan at OMES is titled “Leadership Starts Here.” Designed by art teacher Carol Popwell, the statue at OMES has several references to the school, including the “GOOM” spirit tagline, the school’s bluebird mascot, Oak Mountain’s eagle mascot, and balloons that pay tribute to deceased teachers Maggie Russell and Lynn Purser are special touches to make it special.

Popwell said the biggest lesson for the students was watching a professional piece of artwork go from beginning to completion.

“Having a mini-Vulcan housed at OMES reminds us of what we have learned and gives us a creative way to honor our school, city and community,” Popwell said. “It shows how our students are learning to be leaders at school and preparing to be the future leaders of our community and beyond.”
