Stonecreek Montessori Academy’s middle and high school robotics team, the Robostangs, steered their robot to a victory at the FIRST Technology Challenge, North Alabama Qualifier held in Huntsville on January 24, placing first out of a total of 17 teams and earning the title of “Winning Alliance Captain.”

The Robostangs then competed in the State Championship at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia on February 14, with other teams from across Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. The team ended the season placing in the top 25 teams overall among all teams in the three states.

The Robostangs spent months designing and building their robot, which consists of a LEGO Mindstorm brick and a Tetrix body, as well as completing computer assisted drawing tasks and C programming tasks to prepare for the tournaments. A group of team members is also responsible for observing and interviewing other teams before and during each tournament.

December 13th, the team participated in the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology’s RoboDragons Qualifier in Lawrenceville, Georgia, earning the third place award, and qualifying for the Huntsville tournament. The team was also awarded the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Connect Award for reaching out to the local and engineering communities.
