Shelby County schools cancel activities after 6 p.m. due to weather threat

The Shelby County school district has canceled all school activities scheduled for after 6 p.m. tonight due to an elevated risk of severe storms and high winds later this evening.

The National Weather Service office for the Birmingham area indicates an elevated threat of tornadoes, golf ball-size hail and damaging winds up to 70 mph between 6 p.m. tonight and 4 a.m. Wednesday in the portion of central Alabama that includes Jefferson and Shelby counties.

There is a significant threat of strong tornadoes, golf ball-size hail and damaging winds up to 70 mph in an area from Clanton southward past Troy, the weather service said.
