The Briarwood Christian School football team has picked up where it left off last season.

The Lions flexed their muscle in an emphatic way last week, taking down Class 5A No. 5 Wenonah, 34-0, in a Region 5 contest.

No. 1 Briarwood (4-0, 2-0 region) has won 10 straight region games, spanning back to the end of 2015, and will look to extend that streak as it travels to Fairfield on Friday night.

Last week, the Lions dismantled Wenonah behind a huge first half. Three Michael Hiers touchdowns and a pick-six by Andrew Sherrod allowed Briarwood to open up a 27-0 lead at halftime.

“We made some big plays,” said Briarwood head coach Fred Yancey after the game. “That’s what you’ve got to do when you play against a team like Wenonah. That’s a great program and they play good ball. We just hit a few big plays that went our way tonight.”

Hiers finished 10-of-14 for 215 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for a touchdown. His 10 completions went to six different receivers.

“Michael has proven to me he’s a real good quarterback,” Yancey said.

Briarwood’s defense held Wenonah to just 212 total yards and forced a pair of turnovers.

This week, the Lions take on a Fairfield squad coming off its first win of the season. After a loss to Central-Phenix City to open the year, Fairfield has split its first two region games, a double-overtime loss to Pleasant Grove and a win over Woodlawn last week.

The game kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday at Clements Field.
