Briarwood softball ends season with tourney win

The Briarwood Christian School Junior Varsity Softball Team won the Sylacauga Lady Aggie Classic Softball Tournament in April. Head Coach Karen England said her team won four straight games in the tournament to win them the trophy.

“This team worked so hard all year and genuinely loves to play with each other,” she said. “I can’t think of a better way to end the season.”

England named Linley Slawn the unofficial MVP of the tournament. The freshman pitcher and first baseman pitched in three of the four wins in the tournament and was a major part of claiming the title for the Lady Lions.

The highlight of the tournament for Briarwood came late in the Championship Game, according to England. Anna Durret, outfielder for Briarwood, made a critical catch in right field to get the out as Florence High School players were rounding bases to score.

High school JV softball teams from across Alabama are invited to play in the tournament. Briarwood’s opponents included Sylacauga High School, Shelby County High School, Florence High School and Shades Valley High School.

Members of the tournament-winning team were Linley Splawn; Madi Bussell; Amelia Moore; Elizabeth Shepherd; Abigail Anderson; Rachel Walz; Anna Durrett; Lucy Vetrano; Molly Guillory; Taylor Brown; Haley Bradford; and Taylor Sumners.
