Busy Tuesday night for area teams
Tuesday was a busy day for the local high school baseball and softball teams. Here's a rundown of how many of them fared.
Baseball
Jags swept by Bob Jones
The Spain Park baseball team hosted Bob Jones for a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, with the Patriots returning home with a pair of wins under its belt.
Bob Jones cruised to a 7-1 victory in the first game, as the Patriots scored four runs in the second inning and made that lead stand up. The Jags notched just two hits in the ball game. Peyton Sanderson drew a bases loaded walk in the second inning for their only run.
Michael Purser started the game for Spain Park and went 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits. Tyler Greer gave up two runs in the final 2 2/3 innings.
Spain Park didn’t fare much better in the second game either, falling 11-1. Bob Jones took an 8-0 lead after three innings and added the final three in the fifth. Jacob Rich scored on a passed ball in the fourth to plate Spain Park’s run.
Lions dominate in area win
The Briarwood baseball team hit well and pitched well on Tuesday, as the Lions defeated area foe Shelby County, 13-0.
The Lions scored in every inning after the first, including five in the third and four in the sixth to enact the run rule after six innings.
Michael Hiers, Cole Steadman and Sam Hamner each drove in two runs apiece in the game, and Kolby Kwarcinski, Ben Metzger and Hiers teamed up for the four-hit shutout on the mound.
Hornets shut out by Helena
Helena scored 10 runs in the first three innings and did not allow Chelsea any hope in a 10-0 victory on Tuesday in an area matchup.
Helena scored seven runs in the third inning to put the game virtually out of reach, as the Hornets registered just four hits on the day.
Eagles win big at Pelham
The Oak Mountain baseball team put up a six-spot in the third inning on the way to a convincing 9-2 win at Pelham on Tuesday evening.
For the Eagles, Caleb Floyd drove in three runs and Mason Williamson knocked in a pair, as both guys went 2-for-3 in the game. Williamson got the scoring started in the third inning with a two-run double, followed by a two-run home run from Floyd.
Floyd made it 7-0 in the fourth with an RBI single. Ethan Holsombeck drove in the final two Oak Mountain runs with a double in the fifth.
Scott Fleming, Carlton Lucas and Floyd combined to give the Eagles a strong showing on the mound.
Softball
Jones throws no-hitter in Eagles win
She gave up a run in the first inning, but Abby Jones hurled a no-hitter for the Oak Mountain softball team, as the Eagles picked up a 6-1 area win over Mountain Brook on Tuesday.
After beginning the game with a pair of walks and allowing one of those runners to score, Jones did allow another baserunner, as she hurled seven innings of no-hit ball to pick up the win.
Oak Mountain scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to gain the lead, and added three more in the third on an O’Neil Roberson RBI single and Abbi Brown’s second and third RBIs of the game.
Cassady Greenwood accounted for the final run of the game with a solo home run in the fifth.
Calera shuts out Lions
The Briarwood softball team ran into a strong arm on Tuesday, only scratching across three hits in a 3-0 loss.
Ashlynn Hamm went the distance for Calera, throwing seven shutout innings. Lydia Coleman, Riley Coyne and Daryl Deeter notched the only Briarwood hits on the night. Cameron Fountain started the game for Briarwood and went five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits. Caroline Campbell pitched a perfect sixth.
Hornets win in final inning
The Chelsea softball bats woke up in the seventh inning, as Brooke Burback’s run-scoring double and Allie Miller’s two-run home run gave the Hornets a 5-2 win over Pelham on Tuesday.
Those three runs broke a tie and gave Chelsea the edge it needed to pick up the road win. Pelham got on the board with a run in the first, but the Hornets tied the game on a Camryn Smith homer in the second. In the third, Skylar Baker drove in Miranda Traylor – who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the game – to give Chelsea a 2-1 edge. Pelham tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth, where the game stood until the final inning.
Sarah Cespedes went the distance for the Hornets, allowing two runs on eight hits in seven innings.
