The Oak Mountain High School football team has picked itself off the ground and picked up its first win of the season.

Despite losing quarterback Wyatt Legas and losing its first three games in disappointing fashion, the Eagles drilled Vestavia Hills last Friday, 34-7.

With that win, the Eagles now have some confidence and face a team this week in Thompson that they can have every expectation of beating.

Oak Mountain is one of four teams in Class 7A, Region 3 sitting with a 1-1 record in region play, making this week of action important for all eight teams in the region, as teams start to jockey for their place in the standings.

Last week, Daniel Salchert finished with 101 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Jackson Kimbrell made his second start at QB, passing for 117 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 69 more yards and another score.

“Got the first game jitters out of the way,” he said. “Just a lot more composed this game. We did what we were supposed to. We were just hungry, hungry for success. Vestavia has always been a big rival. We wanted it more than they did.”

Thompson lost a tight battle with Mountain Brook last week, 20-17, and is another one of those teams at 1-1 in the region. Mark Freeman has made the Warriors competitive in his second season there, so the game will likely not be decided until late.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Thompson High School.
