Oak Mountain got one step closer to a playoff berth, beating Thompson 8-2 in a Class 7A, Area 5 matchup on Thursday night.

The Eagles scored in each of the first four innings, capped off by a four-run outburst in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 stranglehold on the ballgame.

Gene Hurst went the distance for Oak Mountain, who improved to 2-2 in area play, giving up two runs on six hits in seven innings.

Ethan Holsombeck was 4-for-4 in the game, including a double, a run batted in, and two runs scored.

Mason Williamson registered three hits and drove in three runs. John Hartsfield and John McDonald each added RBIs for the game.

The Eagles can now clinch a playoff berth with a win over Tuscaloosa County on Tuesday or Thursday next week.

The teams played a second game following the first that did not count towards area play, that Thompson won 11-10. Every Oak Mountain player got a hit in the game, including multi-hit games from Holsombeck, Hartsfield, Williamson, and Caleb Floyd.
