Hornet volleyball off to hot start

Taylor Hackett led the charge as the Chelsea High School volleyball team put together a successful run at the Smiths Station Invitational on Saturday, August 27.

Hackett registered 39 assists, 15 kills and 15 digs on the day, as the Hornets ran through pool play unbeaten. Chelsea knocked off Auburn (25-13, 25-14), Russell County (25-16, 25-7), Brookstone [GA] (25-12, 25-14) and Troup [GA] (25-22, 25-18).

Chelsea then defeated Tuscaloosa County, 25-20 and 25-18, to advance to the finals without having dropped a set.

However, Auburn won -- 25-17, 25-21 -- in straight sets to conclude the tournament.

Lexie Riggins totaled 29 kills, 22 digs, 5 aces and 7 blocks on the day, while Jules Hamer contributed 29 kills, 17 aces and 17 blocks. Ashley Mock finished with 32 assists.

After an opening-day win against Jeff Davis and its performance in the tournament, Chelsea sits at 6-1, with a trip to McAdory looming Monday afternoon.
