MONTGOMERY – The first day of the Class 6A state softball tournament went much better than the second day for Chelsea High School.

After winning two out of three games on Wednesday in the opening day of action, Chelsea fell to Daphne, 10-0, in an elimination game on Thursday morning.

The Hornets failed to get a hit in the game and coach Heather Lee was ejected for arguing a call in the fourth inning, when a bunt was popped into the air and it appeared to hit a base runner after a bounce while the ball was still in fair territory.

Lexi Serio and Allie Miller each drew walks and Sarah Cespedes was hit by a pitch, the only Chelsea players to reach base on the day.

A pair of infield hits led to a three-run homer, as Daphne struck first and took a 3-0 lead after an inning. Daphne added to that lead with runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to finish off the contest.

The poor game on Thursday was a sour end to an otherwise great season, as Chelsea replaced seven starters from its state championship team in 2016.
