The Chelsea High School basketball team ran its win streak to eight games by way of winning the UMS-Wright Christmas Classic with a 62-58 victory over Monroe County in the championship game on Thursday.

In the final, Chelsea jumped out to an early lead before a back-and-forth second quarter sent the game to halftime tied at 31-31. The Hornets held onto a slim lead for much of the second half, unable to completely pull away, but held on for the win.

Joseph Lanzi led the Hornets with 22 points and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Josh Hanna joined Lanzi on the all-tournament team, as he went for 11 points and eight rebounds in the game.

In the semifinals, Chelsea knocked off St. Charles (La.), 50-37, thanks to a strong third quarter and the ability to slow the game down in the final period. Tyler Coleman led the Hornets with 11 points.

Chelsea won a tight contest with the tournament host, UMS-Wright, in the opening round, 55-52. The Hornets led by 17 heading into the final period, before a furious comeback allowed UMS back in the game. The Hornets prevailed, as Lanzi led the team with 20 points.
