HS hoops update: Teams preparing for start of area play

Holiday tournaments have concluded for high school basketball teams and area play is just around the corner.

BRIARWOOD

The Briarwood Christian School basketball teams took part in the Jefferson-Shelby Hoops Classic last week.

On Tuesday, the Lady Lions opened their tournament with a 44-29 loss to McAdory High School. Morgan Hutchinson led the way with 14 points. The boys team managed to pick up a win on Tuesday, defeating Gardendale High School, 40-39.

Wednesday, the Lady Lions rebounded to secure a 39-26 win over Gardendale, as Lauren Smith notched a team-high of 16 points. Hutchinson added 11. The boys did not fare as well, dropping a 60-46 decision to Shades Valley High School.

This week, the Lions travel to Sylacauga on Jan. 9 before hosting Shelby County on Jan. 12 and Westminster-Oak Mountain on Jan. 13.

CHELSEA

The Chelsea High School basketball teams took part in the Jefferson-Shelby Hoops Classic last week.

The Lady Hornets started their run in the tournament on Tuesday with a 70-52 loss to Pleasant Grove High School. In the game, Michaella Edwards nearly achieved a double-double with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Jordan Parker did notch a double-double, though, with 12 points and 11 boards. Hope Richard added 10 points.

The boys team also suffered a defeat on Tuesday, with a 54-42 loss to Pleasant Grove, but the Hornets rebounded on Wednesday to pick up a 53-38 victory over Shelby County.

The girls returned to action on Thursday and fell to Pinson Valley High School, 57-44. Edwards and Richard each tallied double-doubles, with identical lines of 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Hornets are now 3-14 on the year.

On Friday, the boys team dropped a 47-33 decision to Oak Mountain High School, as Sam Towery led the Hornets with nine points. Chelsea is now 9-9 on the season.

This week, the Hornets are on the road for three games. Both teams play Gardendale on Jan. 9, Pelham on Jan. 12 and wrap up the week at Calera on Jan. 13.

OAK MOUNTAIN

The Oak Mountain High School basketball teams took part in the Jefferson-Shelby Hoops Classic and hosted portions of the tournament.

The Lady Eagles began their run on Wednesday with a 41-39 win over Shelby County. Kailey Rory led the way with 19 points, and Hannah Edwards added 10. The boys played a tight game as well, but fell to a pesky Pleasant Grove squad, 53-52.

In the quarterfinals on Thursday, the girls didn’t fare as well, dropping a 39-27 decision to Clay-Chalkville High School. Cassady Greenwood led the team with eight points. The boys team took down crosstown foe Chelsea, 47-33, on Thursday. Chris Mayweather led the way with 17 points, with Drew Dunn adding 14.

This week, Oak Mountain begins Class 7A, Area 6 play. The Eagles will travel to Spain Park High School on Jan. 9 before hosting Mountain Brook on Jan. 12. On Jan. 13, the boys team will take part in Huffman’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day event, as it takes on Cordova at 3 p.m.

SPAIN PARK

The Spain Park High School basketball teams played once last week on Friday against Homewood High School. The girls came away with a 66-56 win, while the boys team dropped an overtime contest, 40-39.

This week, the Jags open Class 7A, Area 6 play at home against Oak Mountain on Jan. 9 and at Huffman on Jan. 12.
