Last week, the Chelsea, Briarwood, Oak Mountain and Spain Park basketball teams had to work around the winter weather to get their games played.

BRIARWOOD

Due to the weather, the Briarwood Christian School basketball teams had to alter their schedules slightly, but the Lions played a pair of games last week.

Briarwood essentially played a home-and-home series with Class 5A, Area 8 foe Moody. On Tuesday, the Lions played at Moody, and the Blue Devils returned the trip on Friday. The Lions swept both evenings.

On Tuesday, the girls cruised to a 53-22 victory, while the boys posted a 68-49 win. For the boys, Michael Hiers led the way with 24 points. Carson Donnelly (12 points) and Izaiah Jones (11) were also in double figures.

The Lady Lions were better on Friday, notching a 53-16 win. Morgan Hutchinson and Sophie Muir-Taylor led the way with 10 points apiece. The boys won 75-61, as Hiers scored 25 points and Donnelly posted 19.

The girls team is now 8-8 overall with a 3-0 area mark. The boys are 10-6 and 2-1 in Area 8.

This week is busy, as Briarwood plays four games. The Lions host Calera on Monday and Sylacauga on Tuesday, before a trip to Shelby County on Friday. They play at home against Pleasant Grove Saturday.

CHELSEA

The Chelsea High School basketball teams did not play this week, as the winter weather forced the Hornets to reschedule a handful of games.

This week, the Hornets are busy, with four games on the docket. Chelsea is at Helena on Monday and hosts Pelham on Tuesday. The Hornets then host Helena on Friday and Calera on Saturday

OAK MOUNTAIN

The winter weather caused issues, but the Oak Mountain High School basketball games were able to play two Class 7A, Area 6 games towards the end of the week.

On Friday, the boys team came away with a 69-57 win over Spain Park. Chris Mayweather led the way with 22 points, and Drew Dunn added 19. The Eagles were not as fortunate on Saturday, as they fell to Huffman, 54-43. Dunn scored 16 points and Carson Bobo chipped in nine rebounds. The Eagles are now 12-8 overall and 2-2 in area play.

The Lady Eagles saw their losing streak run to five games with a pair of defeats. Kailey Rory scored 19 points, but it wasn’t enough on Friday, as Spain Park won 51-42. Cassady Greenwood also chipped in 12 points on the night. Rory and Greenwood were held to just 18 points combined on Saturday in a 50-28 loss to Huffman. The Lady Eagles are now 13-8 overall and 0-4 in area play.

This week, Oak Mountain is at Mountain Brook on Tuesday and hosts Huffman on Friday.

SPAIN PARK

The Spain Park High School basketball teams worked around the weather mischief just fine last week, playing a pair of Class 7A, Area 6 games.

The girls team also played in Huntsville to begin the week, as the Lady Jags fell to Hazel Green, 56-47. But they finished the week strong, with a 65-52 win over Mountain Brook on Thursday and a 51-42 win over Oak Mountain on Friday. In Friday’s win, Sarah Ashlee Barker led the team with 17 points. Claire Holt scored 15. The Lady Jags are now 21-4 overall and 4-0 in the area.

The boys team did not have the same fortune, as it suffered an 82-52 loss to Mountain Brook on Thursday and a 69-57 defeat to Oak Mountain on Friday to fall to 5-15 overall and 0-4 in the area.

This week, the Lady Jags begin the week by hosting Gadsden City on Monday. Both teams host Huffman on Tuesday and are at Mountain Brook on Friday.
