HS hoops update: Lions advance to sub-regionals

BRIARWOOD

The Briarwood Christian School boys basketball team opened up play in the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 6, and came away with a 79-56 win over Moody. The Lions had five scorers in double figures on the night. The victory sealed the Lions spot in the area championship game and in the sub-regional round.

The girls team did the same on Wednesday, Feb. 7 by beating Sylacauga, 43-25.

On Thursday Feb. 8, the boys team (15-11) fell to Sylacauga, 68-63, in a hard-fought area championship game. The girls (14-11) suffered the same fate on Friday Feb. 9, falling to Shelby County, 56-45.

This week, the Lions will be in Class 5A sub-regional play and both teams will travel to Central-Tuscaloosa. The Lady Lions will play Monday Feb. 12, with the boys on Tuesday Feb. 13.

CHELSEA

The Chelsea High School girls basketball team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday Feb. 7, as the Lady Hornets fell to Pelham, 51-39, in overtime in the opening round of the Class 6A, Area 8 tournament. The Lady Hornets led most of the way but were outscored 12-0 in the extra period. They finished the year with a 5-22 record.

The boys team also had its season wrap up in the area tournament with a 56-50 loss to Pelham. Jonah Moore led the Hornets with 13 points and Tyler Coleman had 11 points, as Chelsea finished the year with a 13-15 record.

OAK MOUNTAIN

The Oak Mountain High School girls basketball team saw its season come to a conclusion on Wednesday Feb. 7, as the Lady Eagles fell to Spain Park, 52-27. Spain Park jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead and pulled away in the second half. Kailey Rory led Oak Mountain with 17 points. The Lady Eagles ended the year with a 16-11 record.

The boys team came up short against Huffman, 46-35, on Thursday Feb. 8 in the opening round of the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament, ending its season. Chris Mayweather led the Eagles with 11 points. The Eagles finished the season with a mark of 15-11.

SPAIN PARK

The Spain Park High School girls basketball team dispatched Oak Mountain, 52-27, in the opening round of the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament on Wednesday Feb. 7. The Lady Jags took a 17-point lead at the half and never looked back. Claire Holt led Spain Park with 26 points, as the Lady Jags secured their spot in the regional tournament and the area championship game.

The boys team saw its season come to a close on Thursday, Feb. 8 with an 85-42 loss to Mountain Brook, as the Jags finished with a 5-20 mark.

The Lady Jags had to rally, but managed to come back and defeat Huffman, 44-41, on Friday Feb. 9 in the area championship game. Holt scored 15 points and was named tournament MVP. Barker added 12 points, as the Lady Jags improve to 27-6 on the year.

This week, the Lady Jags will be at Jacksonville State University on Thursday, Feb. 15 to take on Grissom in the Class 7A Northeast Regional semifinals. Tip-off is set for noon.
