Local high school basketball teams were in action over the week of Thanksgiving. Among notable performances, the Oak Mountain High School boys basketball team won its tournament at Mortimer Jordan, while the Spain Park girls took care of business in Trussville.

BRIARWOOD

The Briarwood Christian School basketball teams each competed in a tournament last week. The girls team competed in the Bryant Bank Tournament at Hewitt-Trussville, while the boys played at Mortimer Jordan in the Jeff Dennis Jewelers Invitational.

It was the opening of the season for both teams.

The girls picked up a win in their three games. After an opening round loss to Hewitt-Trussville (70-40), the Lady Lions took down Helena, 42-27, with stout defensive play. In the final day of the tournament, Homewood defeated Briarwood 69-24, leaving the Lady Lions with a 1-2 record to begin the year.

The boys team had slightly more success, picking up a pair of wins. Last Saturday, the Lions began their tournament run with a narrow 52-45 loss to Gardendale. On Monday, they picked up their first win, a 74-46 decision over Locust Fork. Briarwood finished the tournament with a 59-44 win over Moody on Tuesday.

Both teams have three games this week, as they host Westminster-Oak Mountain on Tuesday and travel to Pleasant Grove on Thursday.

CHELSEA

The Chelsea High School basketball teams were also in action last week, as the boys hosted the North Shelby Tip-Off Classic, while the girls competed in the Turkey Jamm in Huntsville.

The boys went 2-1 in the round robin event. On Monday, the Hornets picked up a 57-45 win over Childersburg. Talladega got the better of Chelsea on Tuesday, however, knocking off the Hornets, 56-34. On Wednesday, Chelsea rolled past Shelby County, 65-34, as the Hornets improved to 3-2 overall.

The girls have not had the start to the season they would have hoped, as the Lady Hornets now sit with an 0-6 record. At the Turkey Jamm, they lost to Lee-Huntsville, 71-43, and fell to Benjamin Russell, 58-43.

Both teams play three times this week. They will travel to Oak Mountain on Tuesday before a home game against Clay-Chalkville on Thursday.

OAK MOUNTAIN

The Oak Mountain boys team was in action at the Jeff Dennis Jewelers Invitational at Mortimer Jordan, while the girls team took the holiday week off.

The Eagles improved their mark to 3-1 on the young season with three straight victories to take home the tournament title.

Last Saturday, the Eagles took down Locust Fork, 74-52, before winning a pair of games this past week. In the semifinals on Monday, Oak Mountain contained Gardendale in a 42-29 win and beat Mortimer Jordan 54-44 in the final the following day.

This week, both teams travel to Mortimer Jordan on Monday, followed by home dates with Chelsea on Tuesday and Hewitt-Trussville on Friday.

SPAIN PARK

The Spain Park High School basketball teams were also in action in tournament play over the week.

The girls team looked strong in the Bryant Bank Tournament at Hewitt-Trussville, as the Lady Jags put together three straight wins and won the tournament for the second consecutive year.

Last Saturday, they knocked off Fort Payne, 83-36, before winning games on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, they beat Wenonah, 68-55, and beat Hewitt-Trussville, 62-55, on Tuesday to win the tournament. Claire Holt was named MVP of the event.

The Lady Jags are now 5-1 and have won five straight following a season-opening loss to Ramsay.

The boys team picked up a win in three tries at the 39th annual Sneaky Pete’s Rebel Classic at Vestavia Hills. The Jags sandwiched a 42-38 win over Homewood around losses to eventual champion Helena (68-41) and Clay-Chalkville (53-44).

Each team plays later this week, as the boys host Grissom on Thursday, while both teams play host to Pelham on Friday.
