Lions, Hornets, Eagles conclude cross-country season at state

Briarwood, Chelsea and Oak Mountain’s high school cross-country teams completed their seasons at the state meet Nov. 10 at Oakville Indian Mounds Park. Briarwood’s girls finished second in the Class 5A meet, while the boys finished sixth. Chelsea’s girls finished 10th in 6A, and Oak Mountain’s boys finished eighth in 7A.

For Briarwood, the girls had two of the top three finishers, with Cady McPhail crossing the line second overall in 19 minutes, 29.22 seconds, while Chloe Finocchiaro was third in 19:33.44. Adrienne Goolsby finished 12th (20:25), and Lauren Musachia was 16th (20:33) to give the team four top-20 runners. Morgan Harris (70th, 22:37), Chloe Lovvorn (75th, 22:46), Madeline Simmerman (80th, 22:57), Anna Ferguson (95th, 23:33), Grace Lovell (98th, 23:45) and Stella Bell (113th, 24:24) all ran as well.

On the boys side, Trent Malloy posted a blistering time of 15:52.35 to win the race. Following Malloy were Patrick Hnizdil (51st, 18:10), Sam Candler (55th, 18:11), Luke Thompson (57th, 18:12), Jay Greene (59th, 18:14), Joseph Bell (60th, 18:15), Matthew Earnest (78th, 18:52), Joseph Hopkins (79th, 18:54), David Houston (102nd, 19:30) and Jackson Moore (131st, 20:20).

Chelsea had a pair of boys qualify as individuals, as Cade Neuberger finished 39th overall with a time of 17:34 and Miles Brush finished 49th in 17:44.3. For the girls, Teanna Cason posted an eighth-place finish, coming home in 20:02. Other runners for the Hornets were Nakia Coleman (51st, 21:53), Esther Rabenau (57th, 21:59), Avery Thompson (103rd, 23:17), Lauren Thompson (122nd, 23:44), Morgan Williamson (153rd, 24:36), Samantha Kennedy (160th, 24:54), McKenzie Gunn (169th, 25:10), Emma Anderson (170th, 25:12) and Maggie Masters (181st, 25:48).

Two Oak Mountain girls qualified as individuals, as Evie Bell (21st, 19:35) and Emma Grace Phillips (40th, 20:21) performed well. The boys team had four runners in the top 40, as it was led by Walker Cole (21st, 16:23), Bryce Keefover (35th, 16:34), Jonah Barrett (37th, 16:36) and Hansen McCown (38th, 16:38). Following them were Kenny Chavez (79th, 17:26), Reese Bell (80th, 17:26), Michael Marvin (110th, 17:57), Skylar Johnston (120th, 18:10), Connor Moore (135th, 18:42) and Josh Stidfole (155th, 19:15).
