The Briarwood Christian School football team has put itself in good shape as it heads towards the halfway point of the season.

The Lions (3-1, 3-0 Class 5A, Region 5) have reeled off three straight wins against Moody, Wenonah and Fairfield after a season-opening defeat to Class 6A Chelsea and now sit alone atop the region.

Mortimer Jordan sits in the same position currently, as the Blue Devils are 3-0 in Region 6. The game could potentially be a matchup seen again in November and will be a good test to see where each team stands outside of the region.

The game will be played Friday at 7 p.m. at Mortimer Jordan High School.

The two teams have matched up once previously, with the Lions handling the Blue Devils, 38-0, in 2010.

Last week, Briarwood took advantage of several mistakes and came away with a 27-0 shutout victory over Fairfield. Lions quarterback William Gray threw a pair of touchdown passes, one to Barrett Tindall from 12 yards out in the second quarter, and another to J.R. Tran-Reno for four yards in the fourth.

The Lions are ready for the test this week, and head coach Fred Yancey was impressed with what limited film he had seen before the Fairfield game.

“I looked at some tape on (Mortimer Jordan) earlier today, and they look mighty good,” Yancey said following the Fairfield game.
