The Oak Mountain High School volleyball team played well in front of its home crowd on Thursday night, downing Vestavia Hills, 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-18), in a matchup of top 10 Class 7A teams.

The Eagles wasted no time jumping out in front of the Rebels, as they took a 13-4 lead to begin the contest. A healthy student crowd made for an energetic atmosphere, and Oak Mountain used that to its advantage as it stormed to a 25-12 opening set victory.

Vestavia frustrated the Eagles early in the second set. After Oak Mountain jumped out to a 4-1 start, the Rebels scored five consecutive points to take a 6-4 edge. But the Eagles settled down, regained the lead and went on to a 25-16 win in the set.

The third set was business as usual until the latter stages, when the Eagles had some difficulty finishing off the match. After allowing the Rebels a handful of points toward the end, Oak Mountain took a 25-18 third set to seal the sweep.

Oak Mountain (25-2) is coming off a sweep of Tuscaloosa County earlier in the week. Last weekend, the Eagles ripped off six straight wins to take the HeffStrong Tournament title at Spain Park.

The Eagles’ only two losses this season are to reigning Class 7A state semifinalist McGill-Toolen and Marist of Georgia.

Friday and Saturday, Oak Mountain will take part in the Over the Mountain Tournament at Hoover. The Eagles will face Vestavia Hills, Enterprise, Pinson Valley and Jasper in pool play, before bracket play begins Saturday afternoon.
