The Reset: Basketball teams open area play

BASKETBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood basketball teams began Class 5A, Area 8 play last week with a pair of games.

On Tuesday, the Lions made a trip to Ramsay, which featured strong boys and girls squads. The Lady Lions fell to the Rams 59-20, as Maddie Vaughn led Briarwood with eight points. The boys team fell to Ramsay 70-59, as Hayden Lamey scored 18 points and Cal Reebals went for 11.

On Friday, the girls fell in a tight one to John Carroll, 31-28. Emily Scott scored nine points to lead the Lady Lions, while John Carroll’s Emma Bauer led all scorers with 13 points. The boys team was able to pick up a convincing 63-32 victory over the Cavs. Lamey scored 18 once again, and Chance Beard scored 10 points.

For the season, Briarwood’s boys are 10-8 overall and 1-1 in area play, while the girls are 7-5 and 0-2. This week, the Lions play two more area games, at Woodlawn on Tuesday and at home against Ramsay on Friday. Briarwood also hosts Sylacauga on Saturday.

Chelsea

The Chelsea basketball teams opened up Class 6A, Area 8 play last week with a pair of games.

On Tuesday, the Hornets traveled to Pelham. The girls team began the evening with a 48-34 win. Jordan Parker had a great game, going for 23 points, while Sydney Schwallie added 10 points. The boys team edged out a tight win, beating the Panthers 48-45. Pelham’s Chris Brown led all scorers with 16 points, but Daniel Washington (14) and Jacob Tierney (12) notched double figures for Chelsea.

Chelsea hosted Calera on Friday and picked up another big area sweep. The Lady Hornets edged out Calera for a 42-37 win, with Schwallie tallying 12 points and Pressley Rains adding 10 points. The boys game was also a close one, with Chelsea edging out a 45-42 win. Washington went off for 22 points in the win, and Tierney scored eight.

The girls team is now 9-10 on the year, while the boys team is 10-10. Both teams are off to 2-0 starts in area play and play two more area contests this week. The Hornets have home games against Helena on Tuesday and Pelham on Friday.

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain basketball teams opened up Class 7A, Area 5 play with two games last week.

On Tuesday, the Eagles hosted Hoover, with the girls team battling the top-ranked Lady Bucs. Hoover came away with a 41-24 win, as Jada Knight led the Bucs with 12 points. Leading Oak Mountain were Kailey Rory and Abi Brown, who scored eight points apiece. Hoover’s boys used a strong fourth quarter to overcome the Eagles 64-52. Ahman Ellington led Hoover with 18 points, and Zane Nelson led the Eagles with 16 points. Evan Smith also contributed 13 points and four assists for the Eagles.

On Friday, the Lady Eagles fell to Tuscaloosa County 42-39. Rory scored 17 points, and Brown added eight in the tight loss. The boys team picked up its first area win with a 62-48 victory. Noah Young had a great game, going for 23 points and five rebounds. Drew Dunn poured in 14 points, and Antheny Carey nearly notched a double-double, posting nine points and 11 rebounds.

The boys are now 14-7 on the year, with a 1-1 mark in area play, while the girls are 11-9 and 0-2. This week, the Eagles host Thompson on Tuesday and travel to Hoover on Friday in another pair of area contests.


WRESTLING

Chelsea

The Chelsea wrestling team was in action last week. On Tuesday, the Hornets participated in a quad match with Fort Payne, Homewood and Oxford. The Hornets defeated Fort Payne 42-21 and Oxford 45-34. They also pulled off a sweep at the Region 5 duals on Thursday, notching wins over Helena (45-36), Homewood (44-30), Minor (57-21) and Pelham (51-24). Chelsea also competed in the Southeastern Pools tournament at Thompson on Saturday, finishing ninth overall.

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain wrestling team was back in action last week, with three matches and a weekend tournament. The Eagles defeated Prattville 36-31 on Tuesday, before falling to Hoover 54-18 on Thursday. They fell narrowly, 40-36, to Tuscaloosa County on Friday. On Saturday, Oak Mountain competed in the Southeastern Pools tournament at Thompson and finished sixth overall.
