BASKETBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood girls basketball team kept its season alive last Monday, as the Lady Lions knocked off Sylacauga 59-23 in the Class 5A Southeast Sub-Regional. It was the third time this season Briarwood defeated Sylacauga. Marylane Graham led the Lady Lions with a season-high 15 points. Maddie Vaughn added 10 points and Jalen Hunter scored nine.

The Lady Lions’ season came to a close on Saturday, as they fell to top-ranked Charles Henderson 55-12 in the regional semifinals at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery. Vaughn scored six points for Briarwood. The Lady Lions finished Lorie Kerley’s first season as head coach with a 13-10 overall record.

Chelsea

The Chelsea girls basketball team continued its impressive season with a win in the Class 6A Southeast Sub-Regional last Monday, as the Lady Hornets beat Benjamin Russell 58-45. The Lady Hornets had three scorers reach double figures, led by Pressley Rains’ 19 points and followed by Mackenzie Titus (16) and Ellen Fleming (12).

The Lady Hornets had their season come to a close on Friday, as they fell to Carver-Montgomery 69-33 in the regional semifinals in Montgomery. Click here for a full recap of the contest.


BASS FISHING

The Briarwood bass fishing team got its season off to a great start, as the Lions won the ASABFA Regional at Lake Martin on Feb. 9. Carson McKeen, Carson Miller, Riley Underwood, Mason Wright, Grayson Morris, Tucker Smith, Jordan Martens, Sadie Stanford, Reid Mays and Ian Davis all competed for the team.


WRESTLING

The Chelsea and Oak Mountain wrestling teams competed at the state tournament in Huntsville over the weekend, with Chelsea placing 17th overall in Class 6A with 45 team points, while Oak Mountain was eighth in 7A with 38 points.

For Chelsea, Sam Ingram (170-pound division) was the top individual, as he placed third in his division. Hakeem Stanford (182) placed fourth in his class. Also competing for the Hornets were Bear Maxwell (106), Adam Byerman (113), Casey Stewart (126), Jamian Gandy (145), Connor Mims (152), Hunter Guamieri (160), Elliot Gage (195) and Wesley Pouncey (220).

For Oak Mountain, Cole Thomas (132) notched a state championship, while Sullivan Tipton (126) came home second. Kirk Smitherman (106), Patrick Neal (120), Jacob Gagnon (160), Harrison Kinsey (170) and Jacob Golfdon (195) also competed for the Eagles.


SOCCER

The Briarwood, Chelsea and Oak Mountain soccer teams all kicked off their campaigns last week.

Briarwood

The Briarwood boys started on the right foot, going 3-0-1. They beat Calera 9-0 on Monday before traveling to Foley over the weekend for the Southern Shootout tournament. The Lions tied Fairhope 2-2 and earned wins against Baker (2-0) and Bayside Academy (3-0).

The Briarwood girls also competed in the Southern Shootout, going 0-3 to begin their season. The Lady Lions fell to Fairhope 4-2, St. Paul’s 5-0 and McGill-Toolen 2-0.

Chelsea

The Chelsea boys went 3-2 in their opening week. They opened on Monday with a 7-0 victory over Susan Moore thanks to a hat trick from Lando Nichols. Two days later, they blanked Shelby County 12-0. Chris Nettuno, Tony Nettuno, Camilo Montes and Tucker Beavers all scored a pair of goals in the contest, while Nichols recorded three assists. The Hornets then competed over the weekend at the Lakeshore Shootout tournament. They fell to the Randolph School 2-1 and Northridge 1-0 before earning a resounding 6-0 victory over Pell City. Matthew Reinsch knocked in two goals in the win.

The Chelsea girls played only once last week, beating Thompson 5-0 on Tuesday.

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain boys went 2-2 in their opening week. The Eagles fell to Spain Park 6-5 on Monday before competing in the Lakeshore Shootout over the weekend. There, they downed defending Class 7A state champ Auburn 3-1 and Cartersville (Ga.) 1-0. Oak Mountain closed the tournament with a 2-1 loss to LaGrange (Ga.).

The Oak Mountain girls started the season 2-0 thanks to an 8-1 victory over Spain Park and a 4-0 victory over Hewitt-Trussville. Emmi Long and Nicole Payne notched a pair of goals against Spain Park; against Hewitt, Payne had a hat trick.


LACROSSE

One local lacrosse team continued play last week, as the Briarwood boys fell to 1-1 on the year after a 15-2 loss to Mountain Brook on Thursday.
