The Reset: Lady Eagles soccer beats Vestavia Hills

BASEBALL

Briarwood

Last Tuesday, the Oak Mountain baseball team edged Briarwood 8-7, as Stephen Moraski’s walk-off hit in the seventh inning lifted the Eagles to the victory. Moraski had two RBIs in the contest, along with Jake Rivers. Tyler Waugh led the Briarwood offense with a triple and three RBIs.

Oak Mountain picked up another victory over Briarwood on Thursday, earning a 3-2 victory. Davis Gillespie drove in two of the Eagles’ three runs, while Connor Adams got the win on the mound. He went 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out seven batters.

Chelsea

Last Monday, the Chelsea baseball team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Briarwood 4-3. Briarwood struck for three runs in the top of the first inning, but Chelsea held the Lions to that number and came back. Cal Higdon drove in two of those runs for Briarwood in the first inning. After that, Chelsea’s Reid Gongwer settled in and had a solid start. He ended up going five innings, allowing five hits and striking out seven. Hunter Anderson earned the save, going the final two innings in scoreless fashion. Carter Frederick led the Hornets offense, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Chelsea earned a convincing 7-1 win over Pell City on Thursday evening. Frederick hit a home run and drove in two runs from the leadoff spot. Connor Ball was dominant on the mound. He struck out 10 hitters and allowed just one hit and one run in a seven inning complete game performance.

Oak Mountain

SOFTBALL

Briarwood

Last Monday, the Mountain Brook softball team powered past Briarwood 10-2. Briarwood struck first in the opening inning, as Meredith Kellum hit a solo home run. But Mountain Brook’s offense woke up in the latter innings and the Spartans pulled away for their third win of the season. Maggie Reaves had a double and three RBIs and Ellie Pitts dazzled in four innings of work, allowing just three hits and no runs.

On Thursday, Briarwood earned a Class 5A, Area 8 win over Woodlawn, 18-3. Cameron Fountain led the offense, as she went 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs. Kellum was 2-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs. Callie Mann also knocked a homer and drove in two runs. Rigby Perrien knocked in three runs as well. 

On Saturday, Briarwood suffered a 17-1 loss to Homewood. 

Chelsea

The Chelsea softball team earned a Class 6A, Area 8 win over Pelham last Thursday evening. The game was scoreless until the seventh inning, when the Hornets plated three runs to take the lead and the subsequent win. Brooke Burback reached on an error as the first run of the game scored, with two more runs following in consecutive at-bats. Abigail Bryars and Tyler Erwin combined to shut out Pelham in the circle. Bryars allowed just one hit in four innings and Erwin went three innings and gave up three hits.

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain softball team dropped its Class 7A, Area 5 opener last Monday, falling to Tuscaloosa County 11-9. The Eagles fell behind 8-2 after five innings before rallying to make it a one-run game in the sixth inning. Elizabeth Zaleski hit a home run for the Eagles and drove in three runs to lead the offense. Cat Fortner went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Julia Tucker also doubled and knocked in a pair of runs.

Oak Mountain dropped a second straight area contest on Thursday, as the Eagles fell to Thompson 8-5. Sarah Katona hit a home run and drove in two runs for Oak Mountain in the loss.


SOCCER

Briarwood

Briarwood’s boys soccer team earned an area win last Tuesday against Montevallo. The Lions won 4-0 to improve to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in area play. The girls team also beat Montevallo with a shutout. The Lady Lions won by an impressive 10-0 margin to gain their second area win. They are 2-1 in area play.

Chelsea

Chelsea’s girls soccer team went 1-1 last week, adding an area win to its resume. On Tuesday, the Lady Hornets fell to Gadsden City 1-0. Chelsea bounced back with a 7-2 win over area foe Helena on Thursday to move to 2-0 in the area. 

Chelsea’s boys defeated Gadsden City 3-0 on Tuesday. This moves the Hornets to 4-4 overall on the season. 

Oak Mountain

The newly top-ranked Oak Mountain girls soccer team won two games during the week. The Lady Eagles beat Trinity Presbyterian 10-2 on Monday. 

It was all Oak Mountain in its 4-0 win over previously unbeaten Vestavia Hills on Thursday. The Lady Eagles found the back of the net twice in the first half, with Kierson McDonald scoring twice after a Vestavia foul. The Lady Eagles also converted a key save with 28 seconds remaining in the half. 

Oak Mountain didn’t stop after the half. The Lady Eagles scored two more goals to extend the lead. Hallie Campbell and Danielle Retief both added goals throughout the second half. This helped push the Lady Eagles to 7-0-1 on the season and a move from No. 2 to No. 1 in the latest Class 7A girls soccer poll. 

The Oak Mountain boys lost their only match of the week to Bob Jones. They dropped the contest 4-3 on Tuesday. 


TENNIS

Briarwood

Both Briarwood tennis teams swept Benjamin Russell on Tuesday and the boys team took down Hewitt-Trussville on Thursday. The girls and boys had no problem with Benjamin Russell, not dropping a single set. The boys beat Hewitt-Trussville by a 6-3 score. 

Oak Mountain

Both Oak Mountain tennis teams combined for an 0-3 record on the week. The girls team dropped its only contest to Mountain Brook 9-0 on Tuesday. 

The boys team lost to Mountain Brook 8-1 on Monday before dropping a match to Spain Park 9-0 on Wednesday.
