The Reset: Football, volleyball seasons begin

FOOTBALL

High school football began last week. Briarwood traveled to Fort Payne and emerged with a 28-20 win. This week, the Lions head to Spain Park to take on the local foe.

Chelsea scuffled in a 38-2 loss to Oak Mountain to open up the year. This week, the Hornets host Helena and the Eagles play at home against Pelham. 


VOLLEYBALL

The local teams began their volleyball seasons last week as well. Briarwood finished the first week of head coach Hannah Josey’s tenure with a 4-4 record. The Lady Lions split a tri-match on Thursday, falling to Gardendale in two sets before beating Ramsay in three sets. 

On Saturday, Briarwood put together a strong run in a tournament at Good Hope. The Lady Lions beat Fairview’s JV team (2-0), fell to Good Hope (2-0), lost to Sardis (2-1), beat Mortimer Jordan (2-0) and Sardis (2-0) and lost to Fairview’s varsity team (2-0) in the tournament final.

This week, Briarwood hosts Benjamin Russell and Sylacauga in a tri-match on Tuesday, heads to McAdory for a tri-match with Pleasant Grove on Thursday, and hosts the Barry Walker Serve-Off Tournament on Saturday.

Chelsea opened its season last week by splitting a tri-match on Thursday. The Lady Hornets fell to Prattville (2-0) but managed to beat Brewbaker Tech (2-1). This week, Chelsea hosts Alexandria and Tuscaloosa County in a tri-match on Tuesday, hosts Helena and Hoover in a tri-match Thursday, and plays in Briarwood’s Barry Walker Serve-Off Tournament on Saturday. 

Oak Mountain began Grace Burgess’ tenure as head coach last week, with the Eagles posting a 3-2 record. The Eagles began the season on Thursday with a 3-1 loss to Northridge (23-25, 19-25, 25-22, 24-26). Oak Mountain competed in the Juanita Boddie Tournament over the weekend as well. The Eagles won their first three games, beating Athens (27-25, 25-22), Bob Jones (25-21, 25-27, 15-10) and Vestavia Hills (26-24, 25-21). They were put out by Hartselle in straight sets (24-26, 24-26).

For the week, Lacee Sheaffer finished with 12 aces, 32 kills and 44 digs. Sydney Jaffee had 58 digs and Avery Fletcher had 11 aces, 52 assists and 19 digs.

This week, the Eagles head to Thompson on Tuesday, play a tri-match at Hewitt-Trussville with Shades Valley on Thursday and play in the Barry Walker Serve-Off Tournament at Briarwood on Saturday.
