The Reset: Eagles, Hornets volleyball teams post strong week

FOOTBALL

Last Friday, the local football teams were in action. Briarwood suffered a disappointing 21-14 defeat at Spain Park, as the Jags scored all three of their touchdowns in the second half to come back to win. Chelsea earned its first win of the season with a dramatic 27-23 win over Helena. Oak Mountain also needed some late heroics to knock off Pelham 28-21.

This week, all three teams begin region play. Briarwood travels to Chelsea to begin Class 6A, Region 5 play, while Oak Mountain heads to Gadsden City for a 7A, Region 3 matchup.


VOLLEYBALL

The local volleyball teams were busy last week. Chelsea put eight matches on the board, winning six of them. The Hornets achieved wins over the likes of Alexandria, Tuscaloosa County, Helena, Calera, Westminster-Oak Mountain and Jemison. Their only losses were to Hoover and Oak Mountain. Here are some stats from the week:

This week, Chelsea hosts Homewood on Tuesday and Briarwood on Thursday in a pair of area matches. On Saturday, the Hornets will play in a tournament at Corner.

Oak Mountain also put together a strong week and now sits with a 9-3 record. After falling to Thompson in four sets on Tuesday, the Eagles picked up straight-set wins over Shades Valley and Hewitt-Trussville on Thursday. On Saturday, Oak Mountain beat Clay-Chalkville, Briarwood, Westminster-Oak Mountain and Chelsea all in two sets. Here are some stats from the week:

This week, Oak Mountain hosts Tuscaloosa County for senior night.

Last week, Briarwood hosted a play date with four other teams on Saturday. The Lions beat Clay-Chalkville (25-15, 19-25, 15-9), lost to Oak Mountain (25-15, 25-20), beat Calera (10-25, 25-20, 15-12) and knocked off Westminster-Oak Mountain (25-19, 25-16). This week, Briarwood travels to Chelsea on Thursday for an area match and heads to Muscle Shoals on Saturday for a tournament.


CROSS-COUNTRY

The Oak Mountain cross-country team got its season started on Saturday at the Waffle House/Yellow Jacket Invitational in Oxford. The varsity boys team won the event, beating the likes of Hewitt-Trussville and Hoover in the process. Walker Cole earned overall top honors and set a new course record with a time of 15:56.03. The Eagles were also led by Hunter Wright (fifth) and Reese Bell (sixth). The varsity girls finished fourth, with Lauren Cole (11th), Emma Grace Phillips (17th) and Katie Wright (31st) leading the way. The junior varsity girls finished second and the JV boys were third.
