FOOTBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood football team lost the first game of the Matthew Forester era last Friday, as the Lions fell to Chelsea 17-14. Click here for a recap of the game.

This week, the Lions host Pleasant Grove on Friday to begin play in Class 5A, Region 4.

Chelsea

The Chelsea football team picked up a 17-14 win over Briarwood last Friday night, as the Hornets rebounded from a season-opening loss the week prior. Click here for a recap from the game.

This week, the Hornets host Carver-Birmingham on Friday night to begin Class 6A, Region 5 action.

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain football team did not play last week, but the 1-0 Eagles will host Hewitt-Trussville this Friday night to begin Class 7A, Region 3 play.


VOLLEYBALL

Briarwood

Last week, the Briarwood volleyball team was swept in three sets by Pelham on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Lions rebounded to sweep McAdory and Huffman. This week, the Lions host Homewood on Thursday and play in the Muscle Shoals tournament over the weekend.

Chelsea

The Chelsea volleyball team continued its strong start to the 2019 season, leaving the second week of the campaign with a 15-1 record. Last week, the Hornets picked up two wins on Tuesday with sweeps of Oxford and Clay-Chalkville. On Thursday, Chelsea traveled to Gardendale and picked up a win there as well. 

Some notable stats from the week:

Over the weekend, the Hornets played in the Albertville tournament and won the silver bracket championship. Chelsea picked up wins over Springville, Scottsboro and Crossville (twice) and fell to Albertville in pool play.

This week, Chelsea travels to Helena on Thursday for a region match.

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain volleyball team put together a strong week, winning seven of eight matches and winning the sixth annual Eagle Classic. During the tournament, the Eagles won every set and won all six matches.

On Thursday, the Eagles split a tri-match, beating Ramsay and falling to Pelham. In the tournament, they defeated Woodlawn, Columbia, Montevallo, Center Point, Clay-Chalkville and Shades Valley.

This week, Oak Mountain plays a tri-match at Oneonta with Hayden on Tuesday and hosts Winfield on Thursday.


CROSS-COUNTRY

The local schools began the cross-country season on Saturday at the Early Bird Twilight in Montevallo. Oak Mountain’s girls finished second and boys placed fifth. In the girls race, Evie Bell placed fourth, while Walker Cole finished third in the boys race. Briarwood’s Trent Malloy placed ninth and Chelsea’s Teanna Cason placed sixth in the girls race.
