The Reset: Eagles start 4-0, volleyball teams playing well

FOOTBALL

The Briarwood football team cruised to a 43-0 win over Woodlawn last Friday night, putting the Lions at 2-0 in Class 6A, Region 5 play. Click here for a recap of the contest.

Chelsea suffered a 24-3 loss to Homewood, the second straight week the Hornets have been held to single digits. Click here for a recap of the game.

Oak Mountain earned a thrilling 35-28 win over Vestavia Hills, as the Eagles improved to 4-0 for the first time in school history. Click here for a recap of the win, in which Oak Mountain scored twice in the final few minutes to win.

This Friday, Briarwood hosts Huffman, Chelsea has an open week and Oak Mountain heads to Hoover.


VOLLEYBALL

The Briarwood volleyball team began play last week by sweeping a tri-match on Tuesday. The Lions took down Shelby County (25-22, 25-21) and Calera (25-23, 25-14) both in straight sets. On Thursday, the Lions fell to Mountain Brook in straight sets in an area match (25-17, 25-12, 25-11). Emma Crawford had five kills in the match. Briarwood is now 11-7 on the season and this week hosts Homewood on Tuesday and heads to Chelsea on Thursday for area matches.

Chelsea swept a quad match last Saturday in its only action of the week. The Hornets beat Hueytown (25-8, 25-16), Jemison (25-13, 25-10) and Springville (25-11, 25-16). From the day:

Chelsea is now 18-3 overall and this week plays at Mountain Brook on Tuesday, at Briarwood on Thursday and in Hewitt-Trussville’s Husky Challenge on Saturday.

Oak Mountain was in action last Tuesday, falling in straight sets to area foe Hoover (25-5, 25-18, 25-14). The Eagles rebounded to beat Calera on Thursday (25-20, 25-16, 25-9). For the week:

Oak Mountain is now 11-4 on the year and hosts Spain Park this Thursday.


CROSS-COUNTRY

The Chelsea cross-country team was at the Chickasaw Invitational on Saturday at Oakville Indian Mounds Park, the site of the state meet in November. The Chelsea teams competed in the “Large Schools” meet, with the boys placing 15th and the girls finishing 17th. Contributing to the team score on the boys side were Miles Brush, Thomas Ludwig, Bay Brush, Luke Price and Joseph McGaha. For the girls, Cady McPhail, Avery Thompson, Claire Neuberger, June Price and Alana McCulla scored.

Oak Mountain was also in Oakville, with the boys finishing fourth and the girls coming home 12th. Walker Cole was third overall in the boys race, followed by teammates Hunter Wright, Reese Bell, Noah Arrington and Kenny Chavez. Emma Grace Phillips paced the girls, with Lauren Cole, Katie Wright, Lexi Ray and Avery Welch in tow.

Briarwood swept the George Roy Calera Eagle Invitational, which was put together quickly to give some local schools an event to race in over the weekend. Briarwood won the varsity boys and girls races. Trent Malloy and Joseph Bell were the top two Lions on the boys side, followed by Brandon Dixon, Luke Thompson and Joseph Hopkins. Bela Doss was second overall, with Brenner Statt, Kelly Rollins, Stella Bell and Anna Ferguson also finishing strong.
