FOOTBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood football team remained unbeaten with a straightforward 46-0 win over Woodlawn on Friday night. This week, the Lions host Wenonah in a Class 5A, Region 4 contest.

Chelsea

Chelsea fell to Jackson-Olin, 22-0, on Friday night in a Class 6A, Region 5 matchup. The Hornets are still looking for their first win, and will get another chance this week, as they host Pelham in another region showdown.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain gave Thompson all it could handle in a 35-21 loss on Friday night. The Eagles find the road no easier this week, as they host Hoover.

Spain Park

Spain Park dropped its third straight on Friday, suffering a 24-14 defeat to Class 7A, Region 3 foe Mountain Brook. The Jags host Hewitt-Trussville this Friday.


VOLLEYBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood volleyball team faced several teams near the top of their respective classification last week, as the Lions posted a record of 3-5 for the week. On Thursday, the Lions were swept in a tri-match between Guntersville (18-25, 22-25) and Springville (25-23, 14-25, 9-15).

Saturday, Briarwood played in the Muscle Shoals Tournament, falling to West Morgan (18-25, 23-25) and Central Florence (15-25, 17-25) before defeating Russellville (25-15, 17-25, 15-11) in pool play. In Silver bracket play, the Lions beat Haleyville (25-21, 25-16) and Gardendale (15-25, 25-12, 15-13) before falling to Priceville (21-25, 21-25) in the final. This week, Briarwood plays at Ramsay on Thursday and in the Brooks Invitational on Saturday. Some notable stats from the week:

Chelsea

Chelsea grabbed seven wins last week to improve to 19-4 overall. On Tuesday, the Hornets swept a tri-match against Alexandria (25-16, 25-12) and Tuscaloosa County (25-19, 28-26). Chelsea suffered a loss in its area opener against Helena (25-13, 13-25, 22-25, 14-25) on Thursday.

On Saturday, Chelsea hosted the September SlamFest and did not drop a set on its way to the title. In pool play, the Hornets knocked off Hewitt-Trussville (25-8, 25-11), Brookwood (25-11, 25-12) and Montevallo (25-9, 25-14). Chelsea defeated Springville, 25-18, 25-12, in the semifinals and swept Tuscaloosa County, 25-21, 25-12, in the final. This week, the Hornets host Calera on Tuesday and Pelham on Thursday in area contests. On Saturday, they will play in the Husky Challenge. Some notable stats from the week:

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain now sits with a 9-11 record after last week’s action. On Tuesday, the Eagles fell to Ramsay (18-25, 19-25, 18-25) and were defeated by Pelham (18-25, 16-25, 8-25) on Thursday. Over the weekend, Oak Mountain played in Bayside’s Battle at the Bay tournament. The Eagles lost to St. Luke’s (9-25, 10-25) and Daphne (26-24, 25-27, 13-15) while defeating Murphy (25-9, 25-10) and Montgomery Academy (25-19, 19-25, 17-15). This week, the Eagles will play at Vestavia Hills on Thursday and in Spain Park’s tournament on Saturday. Some notable stats from the week:

Spain Park

Spain Park picked up a pair of Class 7A, Area 6 wins last week. On Tuesday, the Jags picked up a four-set victory at Vestavia Hills (25-19, 26-28, 25-22, 25-20) and on Thursday, they swept Hewitt-Trussville (25-22, 25-23, 25-17). This week, the Jags host Mountain Brook on Tuesday and travel to Hewitt-Trussville on Thursday in area matches before hosting their HeffStrong Tournament on Saturday.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Chelsea

Chelsea’s cross-country teams competed in the Spain Park Cross Country Classic on Saturday. Teanna Cason led the Hornets girls with an eighth-place finish, running the 5,000-meter race in 21:53.69. Nakia Coleman (24:28.95), Esther Rabenau (24:44.99) and Avery Thompson (25:23.79) all finished in the top 50. For the boys, Miles Brush led the way with a time of 18:20.21, good for 13th overall. Cade Neuberger was 15th, coming home in 18:22.37.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain competed in the Spain Park Cross Country Classic on Saturday. Josh Scherer led the boys team, coming home in 24th place with a time of 18:49.32.

Spain Park

Spain Park hosted the Spain Park Cross Country Classic on Saturday. Jacob Warner won the boys race with a blistering time of 16:57.85, while Mackenzie Culpepper led the girls team with a third-place finish, finishing in 20:53.42. Holland Lidikay was 13th in 22:24.29. Mary Virginia McKinley (23:14.74), Lyric Bryant (23:26.9), Paige Walls (24:11.49) and Leanna Todd (24:15.41) all finished in the top 50 for the girls. For the boys, Josh Nonnengard (19:14.17), Max Smith (19:22.51) and Bradley Hughes (19:56.91) were in the top 50.
