FOOTBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood football team notched its third straight win with a victory over Hartselle last Friday night. Click here for a recap of the contest.

The Lions return to Class 5A, Region 4 action this Friday night, when they host John Carroll.

Chelsea

The Chelsea football team was off last week. The Hornets return to action this Friday night with a critical Class 6A, Region 5 game at Helena.

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain football team notched a win on homecoming last Friday night, knocking off Pelham. Click here for a full recap of the game.

The Eagles are back in Class 7A, Region 3 play this Friday night, as they make a trip to Mountain Brook.


VOLLEYBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood volleyball team picked up a pair of wins last week. The Lions defeated Woodlawn in straight sets on Tuesday in a Class 5A, Area 8 match and won a nail-biter with John Carroll on Thursday in five sets. The wins improved the team to 10-16 on the season. Some notable stats from the week:

This week, Briarwood is at McAdory on Tuesday and at Huffman on Thursday.

Chelsea

The Chelsea volleyball team was dominant yet again last week, winning eight matches without dropping a set, including a win in the Chelsea September SlamFest.

On Tuesday, the Hornets defeated Class 6A, Area 8 opponent Helena in straight sets (25-15, 25-11, 25-16). On Thursday, Chelsea swept a tri-match with Brookwood (25-12, 25-20) and Benjamin Russell (25-13, 25-15). 

On Saturday, Chelsea hosted the SlamFest and swept it. In pool play, the Hornets knocked off Springville (25-6, 25-13), LAMP (25-9, 25-9) and Benjamin Russell (25-10, 25-6). In the semifinals, they beat 7A Tuscaloosa County (25-10, 25-12) and in the finals, they took down Brewbaker Tech (25-21, 25-15).

Some notable stats from the week:

This week, the Hornets play a pair of area matches, at Calera on Tuesday and at home against Pelham on Thursday. Pelham is one of two teams to defeat Chelsea on the season. On Saturday, Chelsea plays in the Battle of Old Shell Road in south Alabama.

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain volleyball team played just one match last week, but it was a big one. The Eagles pulled off an upset of Class 7A, Area 5 foe Thompson in five sets after dropping the first two (20-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 17-15). Some notable stats from the match:

This week, Oak Mountain plays in a tri-match at Springville with Moody on Tuesday and is at Clay-Chalkville on Thursday.


CROSS-COUNTRY

The Briarwood, Chelsea and Oak Mountain cross-country teams participated in the Shelby County Championship last Tuesday at Veterans Park in Alabaster. In the boys race, Briarwood was second, Oak Mountain fourth and Chelsea fifth. Oak Mountain won the girls event, with Briarwood placing fourth and Chelsea fifth. 

Finishing the top 10 in the boys race were Oak Mountain’s Walker Cole (second), Chelsea’s Miles Brush (fourth), and Briarwood’s Trent Malloy (fifth) and Joseph Bell (seventh). 

Oak Mountain’s Evie Bell won the girls race in a time of 20:32, with teammates Emma Grace Phillips (fourth), Adrienne Cooley (seventh) and Lexi Ray (10th) placing in the top 10. Chelsea’s Teanna Cason placed second, 30 seconds behind Bell’s dominant run. Adrienne Goolsby (sixth) and Morgan Harris (ninth) were Briarwood’s top finishers.

Chelsea and Oak Mountain also competed in the Oak Mountain Invitational on Saturday. In the boys race, Oak Mountain finished fifth and Chelsea sixth. Oak Mountain placed second in the girls race, while Chelsea was eigth.

Cole won the race with a time of 16:18, nearly 50 seconds quicker than his next competitor. Brush came across the line sixth. Bell was second in the girls race, behind Westminster-Oak Mountain's Hannah Adams. Cason was seventh.
