The Reset: Local teams wrap up September

FOOTBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood football team suffered its first defeat of the season on Friday, falling to Hartselle 14-7 in overtime. This week, the Lions get back into region play with a trip to John Carroll.

Chelsea

Chelsea was off last week. This Thursday, the Hornets will host region foe Helena.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain fell to Pelham, 52-21, on Friday night. This week, the Eagles get back into region action against Mountain Brook on Thursday.

Spain Park

Spain Park took its bye week last week. This Friday, the Jags make a trip to Thompson to resume region play.


VOLLEYBALL

Briarwood

Briarwood’s volleyball team won both matches it played last week. The Lions played at Woodlawn in an area contest on Tuesday, sweeping the Colonels in three sets (25-13, 25-11, 25-8). On Thursday, the Lions hosted McAdory and swept again (27-25, 25-20, 25-21). Some notable stats from the week:

This week, Briarwood plays at Clay-Chalkville on Tuesday and travels to Homewood on Thursday for a tri-match with Hueytown.

Chelsea

Chelsea continued its strong play last week, winning all three of its matches to improve to 30-4 overall on the season. The Hornets swept a tri-match on Tuesday, beating Gardendale (25-10, 25-17) and Homewood (25-9, 21-25, 15-13). Chelsea then picked up a critical area win over Helena on Thursday (25-19, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20). Some notable stats from the week:

This week, the Hornets travel to John Carroll on Monday, head to Ramsay for a tri-match with Hoover on Tuesday and play at area foe Pelham on Thursday.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain won two of its three matches last week to improve to 14-15 overall on the year. The Eagles swept a tri-match on Tuesday, knocking off Northridge (24-26, 25-18, 15-10) and Northside (25-14, 25-10). On Thursday, they took a set from area opponent Hoover but fell in four sets (20-25, 19-25, 25-21, 17-25). Some notable stats from the week:

This week, Oak Mountain plays a couple of area matches against Tuscaloosa County on Tuesday and Thompson on Thursday. Over the weekend, the Eagles will compete in Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa’s tournament.

Spain Park

Spain Park played just one match last week, falling to Helena in five sets (25-12, 19-25, 11-25, 25-22, 14-16). This week, the Jags host a tri-match with Montgomery Academy and Thompson on Tuesday and play a critical area match at Mountain Brook on Thursday.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Briarwood

The Briarwood cross-country teams competed in the Shelby County Championship in Alabaster on Tuesday. Adrienne Goolsby was the top runner for the girls, as she finished 16th overall with a time of 23:15.06 in the 5,000-meter run. Lauren Musachia (22nd, 24:34.42), Morgan Harris (35th, 25:48.92) and Grace Lovell (40th, 26:23.77) also finished in the top 40. For the boys, Trent Malloy continued his strong campaign with a seventh-place finish in a time of 17:52.04. Joseph Bell (23rd, 19:56.93), Joseph Hopkins (25th, 20:02.16), Sam Candler (32nd, 20:24.12) and Jay Greene (38th, 20:55.09) were top-40 finishers.

On Saturday, the Lions went to Montgomery for the Warhawk XC Challenge. Malloy was the top finisher for the boys team, coming home third in 17:21.19. Lovell was the girls’ top finisher (41st, 24:50.54).

Chelsea

Chelsea competed in the Shelby County Championship in Alabaster on Tuesday, with both teams placing fifth. The Hornets posted some solid times, with Teanna Cason leading the girls team, as she finished fourth in 21:36.51. Nakia Coleman brought home a 20th-place finish as well. Miles Brush led the boys, as he came home eighth in 17:57.52. Cade Neuberger finished 11th in 18:15.14 and Thomas Ludwig (27th, 20:04.57) and Joseph McGaha (29th, 20:17.25) were in the top 30.

The boys team finished second in the Oak Mountain Invitational on Saturday at Heardmont Park. Brush led the team with an 18th-place finish, while Neuberger finished 23rd. Cason was fifth in the girls race in 20:45.95, while Nakia Coleman and Esther Rabenau were in the top 40.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain swept the Shelby County Championship on Tuesday in Alabaster, with the boys and girls teams finishing with top honors. The girls team had four top-10 finishers, with Evie Bell (second, 20:47.11), Emma Grace Phillips (fifth, 21:42.81), Nicole Payne (seventh, 22:19.88) and Kate Van Beek (ninth, 22:29.53) leading the way. The boys had four in the top 10, with Hansen McCown (fourth, 17:19.87), Jonah Barrett (fifth, 17:24.81), Walker Cole (sixth, 17:29.33) and Bryce Keefover (ninth, 18:02.12) pacing the team.

Both teams finished second in the Oak Mountain Invitational at Heardmont Park on Saturday, coming in just behind Hoover. Bell (second, 20:25.7) and Phillips (ninth, 21:07.28) were the top finishers for the girls, with Barrett (third, 16:34.08), McCown (sixth, 16:48.36) and Cole (seventh, 16:50.71) leading the way for the boys.
