FOOTBALL

Briarwood

Briarwood continued its unbeaten run in Class 5A, Region 4 play with a dominant 41-7 victory over Parker last Friday. This week, the Lions play Ramsay at Lawson Field on Friday night.

Chelsea

Chelsea ran into a stout Homewood defense last Friday, as the Hornets fell, 34-7. This week, the Hornets host Minor in another region contest.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain dropped its sixth straight game last Friday, falling 10-7 to Tuscaloosa County. This week, the Eagles host Spain Park on Friday.

Spain Park

Spain Park suffered a 32-7 loss to region foe and crosstown rival Hoover last Friday. This week, the Jags play at Oak Mountain in another region contest.


VOLLEYBALL

Briarwood

Briarwood’s volleyball team was not in action last week. This week, the Lions wrap up the regular season with a tri-match on Tuesday between Pell City and Chelsea. On Thursday, the Lions will host Pinson Valley and play in Prattville’s tournament over the weekend.

Chelsea

Chelsea sits with a 40-8 overall record following a busy week last week. The Hornets began action on Tuesday by sweeping a tri-match against Jacksonville (25-22, 25-8) and Oxford (25-19, 26-24). On Thursday, they notched a straight-sets area victory over Calera (25-16, 25-13, 25-12). In the win, junior libero Victoria Schmer surpassed 1,000 career digs.

Over the weekend, Chelsea played in the Shrimp Fest Invitational in Gulf Shores. The Hornets notched wins over Fairhope, Alma Bryant, Cedar Bluff, St. Paul’s and Albertville, while dropping matches to Alabama Christian and Hartselle. Some notable stats from the week:

This week, Chelsea hosts a tri-match with Briarwood and Pell City on Tuesday and another one with Brookwood and Mortimer Jordan on Thursday to conclude the regular season.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain split its three matches last week to move to 24-20 overall on the season. On Tuesday, the Eagles swept Northridge (25-12, 25-6, 25-14). Oak Mountain then fell to Helena on Thursday (25-19, 22-25, 22-25, 23-25) in four tight sets. Over the weekend, the Eagles played in the Country Day Tournament in Louisiana and won two of four. Some notable stats from the week:

Spain Park

Spain Park had a busy week last week, starting with Senior Night festivities to honor seniors Sha’Kevia Hogan, Allie DeSantis and Lora Watkins on Tuesday, as the Jags defeated area opponent John Carroll (25-18, 25-12, 24-26, 25-15). On Thursday, Spain Park was knocked off by Vestavia Hills (23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 20-25).

Over the weekend, the Jags played in the Margaret Blalock Tournament, hosted by Homewood. Spain Park picked up wins over Bob Jones, Alexandria and McAdory and fell to McGill-Toolen and Hazel Green. Some notable stats from the week:

This week, Spain Park plays at Ramsay on Tuesday and wraps up the regular season over the weekend in Prattville’s tournament.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain cross-country teams competed in the DEW It on the Trails event in Decatur on Saturday, with the boys finishing third and the girls coming home sixth overall. The boys achieved their strong finish with their top four claiming top-20 spots. Bryce Keefover (14th, 16:42.3), Hansen McCown (15th, 16:43.1), Jonah Barrett (16th, 16:4.4) and Walker Cole (19th, 16:45.4) all finished in close proximity to one another. Evie Bell led the girls with her ninth-place finish (19:44.6), followed by Emma Grace Phillips (20th, 20:45.1).

Spain Park

The Spain Park cross-country teams competed in the DEW It on the Trails event in Decatur on Saturday. The girls team came home with a fifth-place finish, while the boys finished 12th.

Mackenzie Culpepper (second, 19:10.5) and Jacob Warner (fourth, 16:03.5) continued their great seasons to this point, to lead the girls and boys teams, respectively. Holland Lidikay (26th, 20:59.5), Paige Walls (43rd, 21:28.4), Lyric Bryant (53rd, 21:50.8) and Abigail Jenkins (65th, 21:59.7) were the next four finishers on the girls side.

For the boys, Carter Busby (96th, 18:42.2) and Josh Nonnengard (99th, 18:45.9) cracked the top 100.
