FOOTBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood football team lost its first region game in over three years last Friday, as Ramsay defeated the Lions, 21-7. This week, the Lions wrap up region play with a game against Fairfield on Thursday.

Chelsea

Chelsea picked up its first win of the season last Friday, emerging with a 31-27 win over Minor. This week, the Hornets wrap up region play at Calera on Friday.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain was shut out by Spain Park, 21-0, last Friday. This week, the Eagles conclude region play by hosting Vestavia Hills on Friday.

Spain Park

Spain Park snapped its six-game losing streak with a 21-0 victory over Oak Mountain last Friday. This week, the Jags host Tuscaloosa County on Friday to wrap up region play.


VOLLEYBALL

Briarwood

Briarwood’s volleyball team was busy in the final week of the regular season. On Tuesday, the Lions split a tri-match with Pell City and Chelsea. Briarwood knocked off Pell City (25-14, 25-14) but fell to Chelsea (18-25, 11-25). On Thursday, Briarwood hosted Pinson Valley and honored seniors Kaley Bruce and Anna Grace Pattillo. The Lions won the match in four sets (25-11, 25-27, 25-12, 25-18).

Over the weekend, the Lions played in Prattville’s Smash Tournament. In pool play, Briarwood defeated Montgomery Catholic (25-20, 21-25, 16-14) but fell to ACA (15-25, 24-26), Prattville (19-25, 20-25) and Spain Park (18-25, 6-25). Briarwood’s run ended in Silver bracket play in a loss to LAMP (25-21, 14-25, 8-15). Some notable stats from the week:

This week, the postseason begins. Briarwood plays the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament at Ramsay on Monday. The Lions open with a match against Woodlawn at 3:30 p.m. With a win, the Lions will secure a spot in the super regional tournament later this week and advance to the area tournament final against Ramsay at 5:15 p.m.

Chelsea

Chelsea wrapped up its regular season with a pair of tri-matches last week. The Hornets swept Pell City and Briarwood on Tuesday and won both against Brookwood and Mortimer Jordan on Thursday. Some notable stats from the week:

This week, the postseason begins. Chelsea has fallen victim to its tough area the last few years, and the challenge is no different this season. The Hornets face Helena in the opening round of the Class 6A, Area 8 tournament on Monday at 3:15 p.m. The winner secures a spot in the super regional tournament later this week and advances to the final of the area tournament, set for 4:30.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain’s volleyball team picked up a pair of wins last week as the Eagles have put together a couple of solid weeks leading into the postseason. The Eagles took down Clay-Chalkville on Tuesday (25-13, 25-15, 25-22) and swept Springville on Thursday (26-24, 25-17, 25-13). Some notable stats from the week:

This week, the postseason begins. Oak Mountain will face Thompson in the opening round of the Class 7A, Area 5 tournament on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The winner of that match advances to the area tournament final at 6:30 and secures a spot in the super regional tournament later this week.

Spain Park

Spain Park finished up the regular season with a busy week last week. The Jags fell to both Jasper and Ramsay in a tri-match on Tuesday, but they rebounded to win six matches over the weekend to win the Prattville Smash Tournament. Some notable stats from the week:

This week, the postseason begins. The Jags have fallen victim to a tough area the last few years and they will have a tough matchup in the area tournament once again this season. On Tuesday, Spain Park faces Vestavia Hills in the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament at Mountain Brook. The match will take place at 5:30 p.m., and the winner secures a spot in the super regional tournament later this week. The winner also moves on to the area tournament final at 7 p.m.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Briarwood

Briarwood’s cross-country teams competed in the 27th Annual Husky Challenge in Trussville on Saturday. The Lions were led by Trent Malloy, who finished eighth overall with a time of 16:53.36. Two girls broke through in the top 50, with Lauren Musachia (41st, 21:36.62) and Adrienne Goolsby (49th, 21:52.89) doing so.

Chelsea

Chelsea ran in the 27th Annual Husky Challenge in Trussville on Saturday. Teanna Cason was the Hornets’ top runner, as she finished 11th overall with a time of 20:32.12. Miles Brush (21st, 17:34.45) and Cade Neuberger (32nd, 17:57.28) were the top runners for the boys team.
