The Reset: Volleyball season ends for local teams

FOOTBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood football team capped off its Class 5A, Region 4 slate with a 26-0 win over Fairfield last Thursday night. With the win, the Lions secured the No. 2 seed in the region and will host a first round state playoff game on Nov. 9. This Friday, Briarwood hosts Hueytown in the regular season finale.

Chelsea

Chelsea picked up its second straight win with a 35-3 victory over Calera last Friday night. This Friday, the Hornets will look to extend their streak, as they conclude the regular season with a game against Pell City.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain dropped its eighth straight game with a 28-14 loss to Vestavia Hills last Friday night. The Eagles will conclude the regular season this Friday with a home game against Center Point.

Spain Park

Spain Park won its second consecutive game last Friday, as the Jags wrapped up Class 7A, Region 3 play with a 42-21 win over Tuscaloosa County. This Thursday, Spain Park concludes its season at Shades Valley.


VOLLEYBALL

Briarwood

Briarwood’s volleyball season came to a close last week, as the Lions finished one win shy of a state tournament berth.

Briarwood finished as the runner-up in the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament on Monday, good enough to advance to the 5A South Super Regional. In that area tournament at Ramsay, the Lions defeated Woodlawn (25-15, 25-21, 25-12) before falling to a stout Ramsay team (13-25, 9-25, 9-25) in the final.

At the super regional tournament in Montgomery on Thursday, Briarwood began things with an impressive sweep of Marbury (25-18, 25-9, 25-22). In the following round, the Lions fell to Brewbaker Tech (20-25, 12-25, 10-25). Briarwood finished the season with a record of 24-20, with a pair of seniors in Kaley Bruce and Anna Grace Pattillo graduating following the year.

Chelsea

A strong season by Chelsea came to an end last week, as the Hornets fell a match short of a state tournament berth. After being shut out of the super regional tournament last season due to being in an area with Final Four teams Pelham and Helena, Chelsea broke through in this year’s area tournament.

In the Class 6A, Area 8 tournament at Pelham on Monday, the Hornets knocked off a tough Helena team (24-26, 26-24, 25-20, 25-14) before dropping the final to Pelham in four sets (15-25, 25-16, 19-25, 14-25).

At the 6A South Super Regional on Thursday, Chelsea started with a dominating victory over Opelika (25-15, 25-10, 25-8). The Hornets ran into one of the top 6A teams in Spanish Fort in the following round and fell in three sets (15-25, 11-25, 20-25), ending their season with a 41-8 overall record. Jules Hamer and Sara Swee were the two seniors for the Hornets.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain’s season came to a close in the Class 7A, Area 5 tournament last Tuesday, as the Eagles fell to Thompson in four sets (25-23, 19-25, 14-25, 24-26). Oak Mountain finished the season with a 19-17 record and seniors Maddie Moss and Leah Nielsen depart following a rebuilding year for the program.

Spain Park

In Kellye Bowen’s fifth season as head coach at Spain Park, the Jags finally broke through to the super regional tournament. Having fallen victim to a tough area the last few years, Spain Park advanced past the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament last Tuesday with a four-set victory over Vestavia Hills (25-23, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23). In the final, Spain Park was knocked off by Mountain Brook (22-25, 17-25, 21-25).

Spain Park ran into crosstown foe Hoover at the 7A North Super Regional tournament, as the Jags fell in four sets (21-25, 20-25, 25-20, 13-25) to end their season. The Jags finished the year with a 33-13 record and the program graduates seniors Allie DeSantis, Sha’Kevia Hogan and Lora Watkins.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain’s cross-country team wrapped up the regular season at the Last Chance Invitational in Scottsboro on Thursday. The Eagles boys finished second overall and the girls finished fourth in the Class 5A-7A division.

The boys team boasted three top-10 finishers, with Jonah Barrett (16:10.32), Walker Cole (16:13.32) and Hansen McCown (16:15.72) coming home seventh through ninth, respectively. Bryce Keefover was 12th with a time of 16:31.36. Top finishers for the girls were Emma Grace Phillips (18th, 20:24.16), Gabby Rodriguez (20th, 20:34.79), Adrienne Cooley (21st, 20:34.84) and Jamie Harry (24th, 20:41.65).

Spain Park

Spain Park concluded the regular season at the Last Chance Invitational in Scottsboro on Thursday, with the Jags finishing fifth overall in the boys and girls Class 5A-7A divisions. Mackenzie Culpepper won the girls race, crossing the finish line in 19:08.22. Holland Lidikay was 14th in 20:13.19. Jacob Warner was the top finisher on the boys team, finishing fifth with a time of 16:03.1.
