The Reset: Football teams finish regular season, cross-country completes section

FOOTBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood football team put forth an impressive result last Friday, capping off the regular season with a 31-13 win over Class 6A Hueytown. This Friday, the Lions begin their road in the Class 5A playoffs by hosting Valley.

Chelsea

Chelsea fell to Pell City, 10-7, last Friday to end the Hornets’ season. In Dustin Goodwin’s first year as head coach, the Hornets finished with a 2-8 record.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain completed an otherwise disappointing season on a high note last Friday, as the Eagles knocked off Center Point, 38-8. The Eagles finished the year with a 2-8 record.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Briarwood

Briarwood’s cross-country teams competed in the Class 5A, Section 3 meet last Friday at Hewitt-Trussville. The girls team finished first overall and the boys finished second, with both teams qualifying for the state meet this Saturday in Moulton.

In the girls race, Cady McPhail (20:54.23) and Chloe Finocchiaro (21:04.36) gave the Lions a 1-2 finish, with Adrienne Goolsby (fifth, 21:34.99) and Lauren Musachia (seventh, 22:10.43) also finishing in the top 10. Morgan Harris (12th, 23:42.15), Stella Bell (15th, 24:10.96), Chloe Lovvorn (20th, 25:03.11), Madeline Simmerman (22nd, 25:12.41) and Anna Ferguson (28th, 26:11.94) also ran in the race.

The boys also had a winner, with Trent Malloy crossing the line in 17:03.81 for the Lions. Joseph Bell came across fifth in 18:45.02 to give the team a pair of top-five finishers. Also running for the boys were Patrick Hnizdil (12th, 19:18.29), Sam Candler (13th, 19:22.71), Jay Greene (15th, 19:37.39), Luke Thompson (17th, 19:48.84), Matthew Earnest (19th, 20:06.97), David Houston (25th, 20:35.16) and Jackson Moore (33rd, 21:13.07).

Chelsea

The Chelsea cross-country teams ran in the Class 6A, Section 3 meet on Friday. The girls team finished third overall and qualified for the state meet this weekend. The boys finished fifth to close out the season.

For the girls, Teanna Cason led the way with a fifth-place finish, as she crossed the line in 20:38.78. Nakia Coleman (22:44.24) and Ether Rabenau (22:47.26) finished 17th and 18th, respectively. Avery Thompson (26th, 23:56), Lauren Thompson (32nd, 24:24.24), Morgan Williamson (38th, 25:28.32), McKenzie Gunn (42nd, 25:58.33), Samantha Kennedy (44th, 26:07.11), Emma Anderson (26:31.91) and Maggie Masters (49th, 26:35.01) also ran for the Hornets.

Miles Brush (16th, 18:10.67) and Cade Neuberger (19th, 18:21.73) did well enough to qualify for the state meet as individuals, by virtue of being two of the top six finishers on teams outside of the top four. Nick Ayers (30th), Thomas Ludwig (33rd), Caleb Horn (43rd), Luke Price (51st), Kyle Frangopoolis (52nd), Phillip Dison (59th), Andrew Foster (61st) and Jett Thomas (62nd) competed for Chelsea.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain’s cross-country teams competed in the Class 7A, Section 3 meet on Friday. The boys team finished third overall and qualified for the state tournament, while the girls team saw its season come to an end with a fifth-place finish.

Walker Cole led the Eagles boys with an eighth-place finish, as he crossed the line in 16:38.26. Jonah Barrett was 11th in 16:44.21 and Hansen McCown was 17th in 17:01.65. Bryce Keefover (19th, 17:10.84), Kenny Chavez (25th, 17:35.3), Reese Bell (27th, 17:39.48), Michael Marvin (38th, 18:06.23), Skylar Johnston (43rd, 18:18.76), Josh Stidfole (56th, 18:53.45) and Josh Scherer (58th, 19:14.53) also contributed to the team.

Evie Bell (eighth, 20:08.03) and Emma Grace Phillips (24th, 21:10.52) ran well enough in the section meet to qualify for the state tournament as individuals. Gabby Rodriguez (29th, 21:22.53), Jamie Harry (34th, 21:38.13), Savannah Michael (35th), Adrienne Cooley (48th), Carolyn Bowman (50th), Lexi Ray (51st), Kate Van Beek (58th) and Anna Miller (61st) also ran for the girls.
