The Reset: Football teams fall, cross-country finishes

FOOTBALL

The high school football seasons came to a close for Briarwood and Oak Mountain, as they lost in the state playoffs last Friday.

Briarwood traveled to Oxford and fell to the top-ranked Yellow Jackets 35-14 in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. Click here for a recap of that game. Briarwood finished the season with an 8-3 record.

Oak Mountain nearly achieved the upset, but came up just short in a 24-21 loss to Hoover. Click here for the story of the game. Oak Mountain capped off its year with a 7-5 record.


CROSS-COUNTRY

The local schools competed in the AHSAA State Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Oakville Indians Mounds Park near Moulton. In the Class 7A meet, the Oak Mountain boys finished sixth and the girls placed 10th. In 6A boys, Briarwood finished fifth and Chelsea placed seventh. On the girls side, Briarwood was fourth and Chelsea came home 10th.

BASKETBALL

The Briarwood basketball teams began their seasons last Tuesday, with a trip to Benjamin Russell. The Lady Lions began the year with a come-from-behind 40-35 victory. Emily Scott led the team with 10 points, with Kate Saunders chipping in eight points and Mary Beth Dicen adding in seven. Briarwood’s boys suffered a 63-57 loss, with Landon Nuyt scoring 32 points in the losing effort.

Briarwood’s boys hosted Childersburg on Thursday for the Lions’ home opener, with the home team earning a 53-43 win. Nuyt and John Elliott each racked up 17 points in the victory. 

This week, Briarwood hosts Altamont on Tuesday and travels to Gardendale on Thursday.

Chelsea’s girls earned their first win of the year Tuesday with an impressive 41-26 win over Clay-Chalkville. Mackenzie Titus led the charge for the Lady Hornets, as she finished with 15 points. Ellen Fleming joined her in double digits, with 10 points on the night. 

Chelsea suffered losses to Vestavia Hills on Thursday evening. The Lady Hornets fell to Vestavia 56-41. Ally Smith led the Lady Rebels with 13 points and Titus paced Chelsea with 11 points. Chelsea’s boys suffered an 81-74 loss as well. Win Miller scored 27 points and Grant Uldrich scored 26 points for Vestavia, while Riley Edmiston and Warner Jones each scored 15 points for Chelsea. Josh Bass and Holton Smith each chipped in 13 points for the Hornets as well.

This week, the Hornets host Calera on Tuesday. The boys head to Thompson on Thursday and begin play in Spain Park’s Jag Classic on Saturday.

Oak Mountain’s girls suffered a 40-32 loss to Northridge on Tuesday. The Lady Eagles got back on track Wednesday, as they hosted Wenonah and earned a 48-41 win. Raegan Whitaker led the scoring charge for Oak Mountain with 14 points. Charity Shaw added 12 points and Abby Gordon scored 10.

The Oak Mountain boys began their season on Wednesday, dominating Wenonah 61-42. Will Shaver was the star, scoring 23 points for the Eagles. Brady Dunn drained six first-half 3-pointers to score 18 points as well.

Oak Mountain picked up a varsity sweep of Woodlawn on Thursday night. The Lady Eagles cruised to a 44-14 win behind 16 points from Gordon, followed by seven points by Riley Sullivan. The boys earned a hard-fought 58-56 win. Shaver posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the charge. Ryan Giegel scored 14 points, while Dunn added 11 points. Matthew Heiberger contributed nine points and 10 rebounds as well. 

This week, Oak Mountain’s girls head to Northridge on Monday and both teams travel to Spain Park on Friday.
