The Reset: Lions football season ends, basketball in full swing

FOOTBALL

The Briarwood Christian School football team saw its season come to a close last Friday night, as the Lions fell to Vigor, 26-0, in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. The Lions ended the year with a 9-3 record.


BASKETBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood basketball teams began their seasons last Tuesday night at Sylacauga. Lorie Kerley picked up her first win as head coach of the girls team, as the Lady Lions won, 37-24. Emily Scott led Briarwood with 11 points, while Caroline Mays scored 10. The boys were not as fortunate, as they fell, 68-57. Hayden Lamey led the Lions with 16 points.

On Saturday, the boys team began play in the Jeff Dennis Jewelers Invitational at Mortimer Jordan. The Lions fell to Homewood, 60-44. They will play Gardendale at 3 p.m. on Monday and conclude tournament play on Tuesday.

Chelsea

The Chelsea basketball teams split a pair of varsity games at Gardendale on Tuesday night. The Lady Hornets began the day with a 35-27 win, as Pressley Rains led the team with 13 points. Ellen Fleming also eclipsed double digits, as she scored 10. The boys nearly erased a halftime deficit but came up short, 60-58. Daniel Washington led the Hornets with 21 points, with Michael Gibbs adding 14 and Jacob Tierney scoring nine points.

This week, both Chelsea teams play in the Marble City Classic, a round-robin event at Sylacauga. On Monday, the boys face Childersburg at 2:30 p.m., with the same matchup of girls teams to follow at 4:00. On Tuesday, the girls play Smiths Station at 10 a.m. and the boys face Sylacauga at 11:30. The girls face Cleburne County on Wednesday at noon, followed by the boys playing Talladega at 1:30 p.m.

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain basketball teams began last week on Tuesday. The Lady Eagles went on the road and defeated Homewood, 60-51, behind 26 points from Kailey Rory. Oak Mountain went on a 20-0 run to begin the second quarter and erase an eight-point deficit after the first quarter. Emily Cruce and Hannah Edwards each scored 14 as well. The boys team opened their season with a home win over Leeds, 63-29. Drew Dunn scored 11 points, with Will Shaver contributing nine points and five rebounds and Antheny Carey chipping in eight points and five boards.

The Eagles hosted Pelham on Thursday and picked up a sweep. The Lady Eagles knocked off the Panthers, 50-23, as Rory and Cruce each scored 11 points. The boys won, 55-45, after outscoring Pelham 40-25 in the second half. Turner Youngblood scored 15 points to lead the way. Noah Young contributed 11 points and six boards, while Shaver had nine points and six rebounds.

The boys team began play in the Jeff Dennis Jewelers Invitational on Saturday at Mortimer Jordan. The Eagles defeated Gardendale, 73-64, to improve to 3-0 on the season. Dunn led the charge with 20 points, while Young tallied 15 points and Shaver had 12. The Eagles play Homewood at 6 p.m. Monday in the semifinals.

The Lady Eagles opened up the Husky Thanksgiving Tournament powered by Trussville Gas and Water at Hewitt-Trussville with a 72-54 win over Woodlawn on Saturday. Edwards had 26 points to lead the way, while Rory added 14. A.C. Price scored 12 points off the bench, and the Lady Eagles picked up the win without four normal players. Head coach Beth Parmer gave credit to Julia Tucker for sliding into an added role and contributing with her defense and rebounding. Oak Mountain improved to 4-1 on the year and plays in the semifinals of the tournament on Monday at 7 p.m.
