The Reset: Basketball, track take center stage

BASKETBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood basketball teams were first in action last week on Tuesday, when the Lions teams picked up a sweep over Vincent. The Lady Lions picked up a 34-19 victory ahead of the boys 53-43 win. Hayden Lamey led the boys team with 20 points in the contest.

Briarwood picked up another sweep on Friday, this time over Altamont. The Lady Lions won a low-scoring affair, 34-25. Kate Saunders led the team with eight points, and Emily Scott scored seven. The boys team grabbed a 66-48 win behind 27 points from Lamey.

The girls team is now 4-1 on the season, while the boys have a 5-3 record. This week, the Lions visit Vincent on Friday.

Chelsea

The Chelsea basketball teams began last week on Monday with a set of midday contests at Tuscaloosa County. The girls game was close throughout, but the Lady Hornets fell 49-45. Jordan Parker led Chelsea with 15 points, while Sydney Schwallie and Pressley Rains each scored 10 points. The boys team cruised to a 54-29 win over the Wildcats, behind a balanced attack. Matthew Lanzi led the team with 11 points, and Daniel Washington scored 10. Chelsea’s defense held Tuscaloosa County to just three points in the third quarter, and nine different Hornets scored in the contest.

Chelsea was back in action on Thursday, as the Hornets fell to Homewood. The Lady Hornets suffered a 46-39 defeat. Zoe Watts and Caidyn Cannon each scored 14 points for the Patriots, and Jordan Parker led Chelsea with 13 points. Holton Smith scored 13 off the bench for the boys in a 54-46 defeat. Jack Dorough led Homewood with 18 points, and Logan Padgett scored 16.

This week, the Hornets head to Thompson on Monday and play at Clay-Chalkville on Thursday.

Oak Mountain

Oak Mountain’s basketball teams began play last week on Tuesday, when the Eagles split a pair of varsity contests with Helena. The Lady Eagles started things with a 54-24 win, with contributions from several players along the way. Hannah Edwards led the team with 19 points, followed by 10 points from Kailey Rory and nine from Emily Cruce.

The boys were not as fortunate, with Helena grabbing a 50-48 win. Oak Mountain had a late 3-pointer go in and out that prevented the Eagles from winning. Turner Youngblood led the Eagles with 11 points. Daunte Cave led all scorers with 16 points for Helena.

Oak Mountain was swept by Vestavia Hills on Friday. The Lady Eagles fell 36-24, despite Rory leading all scorers with 15 points. Emma Smith led Vestavia Hills with 14 points. The boys team fell 42-29.

This week, the Eagles visit Pelham on Tuesday and head to Spain Park on Thursday. The boys play James Clemens at Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

A few local indoor track and field teams competed over the weekend in the Holiday Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Briarwood boys recorded the highest finish, placing fourth in the Class 1A-5A division with 38 points. The Briarwood girls placed ninth in 1A-5A with 21.5 points.

The Oak Mountain boys were the only team in the 6A-7A division that notched a top 10 finish. The Eagles placed fifth with 43 points. Below is a list of top performers from the meet:

Jake Nunn: won 400 meters (49.98)

Jaxen McPhail: won pole vault (14-0)

Nicholas Robson: second in 60-meter hurdles (9.03)

Trent Malloy: second in 3,200 meters (10:03.4)

Oak Mountain 

Trey Allen: won high jump, set meet record (6-10)

Aaron Brooks: second in 60-meter dash (7.12)

Glynel Humphrey: third in 60-meter dash (7.13)

Spain Park

Jacob Warner: won 3,200 meters, set meet record (9:38.32)
