The Reset: Busy week for basketball teams

BASKETBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood basketball teams notched a sweep of Locust Fork last Tuesday. The Lady Lions edged out Locust Fork 31-28, behind 11 points from Caroline Mays. Maddie Vaughn scored nine for Briarwood as well. The boys team won convincingly, beating Locust Fork 70-44. Ryan Donohoo led the way for the Lions with 20 points, with Hayden Lamey contributing 15 points and Chance Beard scoring 12.

Briarwood earned a sweep of visiting Benjamin Russell on Thursday night. The Lady Lions picked up a 54-40 win, behind nine 3-pointers in the first half. Vaughn led the way with 23 points on the night, knocking down four triples in the second quarter. Bennett Shaw scored nine points, hitting a trifecta of 3s in that big second quarter. The boys team picked up a convincing 72-52 win as well. Donohoo once again led the scoring charge, pouring in 15 points. Beard and Lamey each scored 11 points.

Briarwood kept up its strong play on Friday night, as the Lions took down Altamont on the hardwood. The Lady Lions earned a 43-25 win behind a balanced scoring effort. Shaw scored 10 points to lead the way, while Mays, Vaughn and Kate Saunders each added eight points. The boys team earned a 67-34 victory, behind 29 points from Lamey. Beard added 10 points.

The Briarwood boys are now 7-0 and the girls are 4-1 on the season. This week, the Lions are at Altamont on Tuesday and host Calera on Friday.

Chelsea

The Chelsea and Oak Mountain basketball teams began last week on Tuesday night with a pair of varsity games. In the girls game, Chelsea pulled away for a 59-41 win. Chelsea’s Jordan Parker scored 13 points and Pressley Rains added eight points. In the boys game, Oak Mountain pulled out a 58-38 victory. Noah Young led all scorers with 19 points to go along with six rebounds. Trey Sullivan notched eight points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles as well. Bryant Royster led Chelsea with nine points.

Homewood and Chelsea squared off on Thursday night, with the Chelsea girls and Homewood boys earning victories. In the girls game, Chelsea staved off Homewood 67-57 in overtime, as the Lady Hornets knocked the Lady Patriots from the ranks of the unbeaten. Chelsea put four players in double figures, as Parker scored 16 points, followed by Sydney Schwallie’s 15, Rains’ 12 and Ellen Fleming’s 11 points.

In the boys contest, Homewood returned the favor with a 52-42 victory. Pate Owen led all scorers with 16 points and nine rebounds, one board shy of a double-double. Marcello Nanni chipped in 15 points as well for the Patriots. Royster (11 points) and Andrew Messier (10 points) reached double digits for the Hornets.

The Chelsea girls are now 9-2 and the boys are 5-7 on the season. This week, the Hornets are at Sylacauga on Monday, at Montevallo on Tuesday, the girls are at Thompson on Thursday, and both teams are at Clay-Chalkville on Friday.

Oak Mountain

The Chelsea and Oak Mountain basketball teams began last week on Tuesday night with a pair of varsity games. In the girls game, Chelsea pulled away for a 59-41 win. Chelsea’s Jordan Parker scored 13 points and Pressley Rains added eight points. In the boys game, Oak Mountain pulled out a 58-38 victory. Noah Young led all scorers with 19 points to go along with six rebounds. Trey Sullivan notched eight points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles as well. Bryant Royster led Chelsea with nine points.

Oak Mountain pulled off a sweep of Woodlawn on Thursday evening. The Lady Eagles picked up a much-needed 47-30 win, led by Abi Brown’s 19 points on six 3-pointers. Abby Gordon scored 15 points in support, with Taniyah Smith and Julia Tucker scoring four apiece. The boys earned a 69-58 victory. Evan Smith led the way, filling the stat sheet with 26 points, five assists and five rebounds. Zane Nelson had 19 points as well.

Oak Mountain dropped a set of games to Huffman on Friday evening. The girls fell 46-32, while the boys dropped a heartbreaker 55-54. Zane Nelson scored 18 points to lead the Eagles, with Wilder Evers scoring 12.

The Oak Mountain boys are now 5-3 and the girls are 3-6 on the season. This week, the Eagles host Pelham on Tuesday, the girls are at Mountain Brook and the boys host Spain Park on Thursday, and both teams are at Vestavia Hills on Friday.

Westminster-Oak Mountain

The Westminster-Oak Mountain girls basketball team earned a 55-26 win over Cornerstone last Tuesday evening. It was a balanced effort from the Lady Knights, who were led by Megan Gache, as she went for 12 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and steal and two blocks. Reave Metcalf scored 10 points and Emily White added nine points. Virginia Welch had 11 rebounds.

This week, the Lady Knights are at Jefferson Christian Academy on Tuesday and host Appalachian on Friday.


WRESTLING

The Chelsea wrestling team swept a tri-match last Tuesday, beating Shelby County 59-16 and Gadsden City 72-12. The Hornets won another tri on Thursday, beating Fort Payne 45-30 and LaFayette (GA) 56-24. Over the weekend, Chelsea competed in the Gardendale Invitational and finished sixth as a team.

Oak Mountain competed in the OTM Duals last Tuesday, beating Pelham 78-0 and Vestavia Hills 63-15. The Eagles competed in a tri-match on Wednesday, falling to Huntsville 39-29 and beating Spain Park 39-33. Over the weekend, Oak Mountain placed fifth in the Border Wars event in Florida and fifth in the Spartan Invitational at Mountain Brook.
