The Reset: Eagles win Oak Mountain Invite

BASKETBALL

Briarwood

The Briarwood basketball teams played once last week, as they hosted Sylacauga on Friday night. The Lady Lions prevailed in a 27-23 slugfest. Maddie Vaughn led Briarwood with eight points in the contest. The boys team fell 60-50. Hayden Lamey led the Lions with 16 points.

Briarwood’s girls are now 7-1 on the year, with the boys sitting at 8-2. This week, the girls play three games in the Winfield Christmas Classic.

Chelsea

The Chelsea basketball teams swept Sylacauga on Tuesday evening. The Lady Hornets dominated and picked up a 38-9 win. Sydney Schwallie led the way with eight points, as nine Lady Hornets scored. The boys team earned a hard-fought 65-63 victory. Caleb Moore went for 22 points and a program-record eight blocks in the contest. Bryant Royster scored 12 points, as 10 different players scored for Chelsea.

On Thursday, the boys lost to Thompson 62-50. KJ Hall scored 13 points to lead Chelsea, with Moore adding 11 points.

The girls played in Spain Park’s Lady Jag Classic. On Thursday, the Lady Hornets opened the tournament with a 47-33 loss to Pleasant Grove. Chelsea rebounded on Friday to pick up a 42-18 win over Shades Valley. Schwallie scored 13 points and Mackenzie Titus added 11 points to lead the way. The Lady Hornets concluded the event with a tight 51-50 win over Mountain Brook on Saturday. Pressley Rains led the way with 15 points, while Jordan Parker scored 12 and Ellen Fleming chipped in 11.

The Chelsea girls are 15-4 overall and the boys are 7-10. This week, both teams are off.

Oak Mountain

The Oak Mountain boys basketball team took part in the Chick-fil-A Birmingham Showcase at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena on Tuesday evening. The Eagles rallied to force overtime with Wenonah, but Oak Mountain eventually fell 62-56. 

Later in the week, the Oak Mountain boys hosted the Oak Mountain Invite, with the Eagles claiming the trophy. The Eagles began the tournament on Thursday with a 71-38 win over Leeds, as four players eclipsed double digits. Brady Dunn scored 17 points, with Trey Sullivan, Zane Nelson and Wilder Evers scoring 13, 12 and 11 points respectively. On Friday evening, Oak Mountain held on for a 57-51 win over Mortimer Jordan. Nelson had 18 points and five assists and Will Shaver notched 12 points and 10 boards. DJ Parks led Mortimer Jordan with 15 points.

On Saturday, the Eagles picked up a 67-52 win over Spain Park to win the tournament. Dunn knocked down six 3-pointers for a game-high 18 points. Shaver had another double-double, contributing 17 points and 10 rebounds. JR Lambert led Spain Park with 10 points.

The girls team went to Bob Jones for a couple games in the Huntsville Hospital Sports Center & TOC Sports Ladies Classic Basketball Tournament. On Thursday, the Lady Eagles fell to Grissom 54-43, as Abi Brown scored 15 points and Charity Shaw added 14 points. Oak Mountain then fell to Susan Moore 73-40 on Friday.

The Oak Mountain boys are now 9-6 and the girls are 3-11 on the year. This week, Oak Mountain’s girls host their tournament and the boys are in Homewood’s Metro Tournament.

Westminster-Oak Mountain

The Westminster-Oak Mountain girls basketball team played in the Jack Schweers Capital City Classic last week in Montgomery and won two of three games. On Thursday, the Lady Knights fell to Montgomery Academy 48-38. In the game, Morgan White led the way with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Megan Gache registered eight points, five rebounds, an assist and two blocks. Reave Metcalf added 10 points and five rebounds.

On Friday, Westminster beat Booker T. Washington Magnet 46-13. White went for 12 points, three assists and five steals; Metcalf had eight points, three rebounds and a steal; and Gache had six points, six rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. 

The Lady Knights edged Altamont 38-36 on Saturday. In the contest, Gache had a double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Metcalf was also in double figures, adding 10 points, three rebounds, an assist, four steals and a block. Virginia Welch had eight points, four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.


WRESTLING

The Chelsea wrestling team swept a tri-match last Thursday, beating Beauregard 52-27 and Opelika 57-18. On Thursday, Oak Mountain fell to Thompson 59-21, and the Eagles finished 12th in the Pelham Invitational over the weekend.
