Twitter explodes with reaction to Spain Park shutout of Hoover

Hoover took over Birmingham area Twitter feeds Thursday night as the Spain Park Jaguars made history with a 17-0 shutout of the Hoover Bucs, who were state champions the past three years.

The word “Hoover” rose to the top of the trend list for the Birmingham area once people realized what was happening and stayed at or near the top of the list the rest of the night.

The Jags captured their first-ever victory over their cross-town rival after 13 previous losses, ending a 43-game in-state win streak for the Bucs.

Thursday also was the first time Hoover has ever been shut out since it became Hoover High School. The last time the Bucs were shut out was Sept. 27, 1991, when they were known as Berry High School and got beaten 13-0 by Hewitt-Trussville.

Fans from both Spain Park and Hoover, as well as interested observers from elsewhere in the metro area and state, lit up Twitter with a barrage of posts.

The social media network really started buzzing about the third quarter when Spain Park scored its second touchdown to take a 17-0 lead.

The momentum grew in the fourth quarter as the clock ticked down and people realized Hoover was indeed on its way to a record-breaking and unexpected loss.
