Nancy Rhodes
Nancy Rhodes was on a weight loss journey when she discovered yoga. Compared to other forms of exercise, she found that yoga not only changed her health for the better, but also helped her find herself.
“I noticed I was much calmer when I finished,” she said. “I felt like there was a lot of room to grow and learn things, not just about the practice in general, but about myself.”
After about 2½ years of practicing yoga, Rhodes decided to go through teacher training. In order to satisfy the required hours of teaching, Rhodes taught her friends and found that many of them were not comfortable walking into a yoga studio due to their size or fitness level. That’s how her idea of Fat Girl Yoga started.
“What I heard over and over as I began teaching yoga was, ‘I’m too fat; I’m too old; I’m not flexible,’” Rhodes said. “None of those are reasons to not practice yoga because that’s not what it’s about, but it can help with some of those things.”
Rhodes began teaching Fat Girl Yoga at a local yoga studio, and the class was extremely successful. Last year, she purchased her own studio and opened Abundance Yoga.
Rhodes has high hopes for Abundance Yoga. More people are joining, and she sees it growing even more in the future.
“What I see is people gathering here together as a community to work on either meditation or fitness or health, and I love being a part of that,” she said.
