Private-practice professionals, including counselors, dietitians, massage therapists, physical therapists and other wellness practitioners, provide some of the most important services in our communities. However, they face serious barriers when trying to open and grow their practices.
For example, traditional office leases require long commitments, large upfront costs and more space than solo practitioners typically need. That’s why Birmingham natives Meredith Calhoun, a real-estate professional, and Becca Impello, a physical therapist and yoga teacher, started Practice Works in 2019.
Practice Works is a coworking facility designed especially for these private practice practitioners. It provides them with flexible, affordable office space and offers a range of options from hourly office rentals to dedicated private offices. It also offers them a calm, quiet, professional environment where they can meet clients.
The response has been great, and Practice Works is now opening its third location — a highly accessible facility in Cahaba Park Circle in the bustling Highway 280 corridor.
“We saw growing demand from private practice professionals who wanted flexible office space closer to where they live and serve clients,” Becca and Meredith said.
The new location, which joins two previous Practice Works facilities in Southside and Vestavia Hills, measures 5,000 square feet and includes 13 private offices and two hourly rental offices, as well as a conference room, coworking space, client waiting area and member breakroom.
“Several of the offices feature full-length windows with beautiful natural light, and the overall setting feels quiet and calming,” Becca and Meredith said.
“As someone who started a private physical therapy practice myself, I understand how overwhelming startup costs, office commitments and working independently can feel,” Becca says. “We created Practice Works to remove many of those barriers and provide a flexible, professional environment where practitioners can focus on serving clients and growing sustainably.”
“Becca understood the challenges practitioners face finding affordable, flexible office space, and I was focused on the client experience,” Meredith said. “I wanted a professional, consistent environment where people could easily access trusted providers, convenient parking and multiple services in one place.”
At Practice Works, practitioners can avoid unnecessary overhead and maintain the flexibility they need while they grow, especially early in their practice.
Members can also access all three Practice Works locations, giving them added flexibility and the ability to meet clients.
Being part of Practice Works also provides members with a sense of community. Members often collaborate, refer clients to one another, share resources and support each other as they grow their practices.
