Brookwood's diagnostic center will open July 5.
A new diagnostic center is coming to the 280 corridor this July.
Brookwood Baptist Health is opening a diagnostic center on July 5 at its new building at the intersection of Highway 119 and U.S. 280. The center includes equipment for X-rays, mammograms, ultrasounds, CT scans, MRIs and bone density screenings.
Although the diagnostic center is located in the same building as Brookwood Baptist’s Freestanding Emergency Department (FED) that opened in November, Christina Brown, physician relationship manager for the diagnostic center, said the building was constructed to ensure separation between the two departments.
A hallway connects the two buildings so that emergency room patients can be taken to the diagnostic side for an X-ray, CT scan or MRI, but most outpatients who enter the diagnostic center would not come into contact with that area of the building, said site manager Walker Turner.
“The majority of patients would never have to walk through here,” he said.
The facility includes state-of-the art technology, said Turner, including a 3D mammography machine. This helps eliminate about 75 percent of callbacks for benign lumps or dense breast tissue, Brown said.
“That helps eliminate that scary report,” she said.
When patients come in for an ultrasound, Turner said the center made sure they would have everything they need within the ultrasound room, including a dressing area and bathroom.
“We have all the conveniences for the patient,” he said.
Even the MRI scanner offers convenience, Turner said. The MRI scanner is enclosed, but the widest available, which can help fit larger patients comfortably. The scanner’s weight limit is 600 pounds.
“Athletes, they will love it,” Turner said.
Overall, the diagnostic center aims to offer convenience and a relaxing experience to patients, Turner and Brown said. The goal of the building’s design was to be a spa-like atmosphere, Turner said, from the paintings to the music played in the building.
“People expect more, and they should,” he said.
This is the only freestanding diagnostic center from Brookwood Baptist Health, and Brown said because the building is one-story and offers ample parking, it is easy for patients to get around.
“It’s a convenience for Shelby County and the 280 corridor so they don’t have to go over the mountain,” Brown said.
The diagnostic center is located at 7131 Cahaba Valley Road, Suite 101. It will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
