Builder's First Chelsea
One of the city’s largest tax producers was approved for annexation into the city limits during the Sept. 1 Chelsea City Council meeting.
The request, submitted by Builder's First Source, LLC consisting of 14.74 acres, was approved by the council.
“They have been the largest sales tax producer in building supplies in our city for a number of years,” said Mayor Tony Picklesimer. “They are a great partner to our city. Their property has never been in the city limits of Chelsea. They reached out to us and so here we are and we welcome them to our city.”
The council also approved a resolution to disallow permits for modular homes in zoning other than A-R (Agricultural-Residential), unless replacing an existing mobile home. A request had been made from a couple residing in the city that wanted to upgrade their 1984 mobile home to a modular home.
After a previous discussion with the county regarding the difference between mobile homes and modular homes, it was approved for a modular home bought from a modular dealer to replace an existing mobile home.
A rezoning request from RDK Estates for 11 acres from A-R (Agricultural-Residential) to E-1 (Single Family Estate) was also approved.
A resolution was approved for the Chelsea Fire & Rescue Department to declare property as surplus and approve its donation. The department will be sending the 1984 Mack 100-foot ladder truck as a donation to the Jackson County Volunteer Fire Department. The unit has been out of service for the last several years and the department at Jackson asked if they would be interested in donating it to them.
“I’m all in favor, it will help them and we don’t really use it,” said Chief Joe Lee. “They understand the problems with it and are still interested in it.”
Also during the meeting the council:
- Gave approval to certify a certificate of election for Chris Grace for the office of council member Place #3 for the term commencing on the first Monday of November, 2020.
- Declaring the month of September 2020 as Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month
- Approval of City of Chelsea Bills to be paid
During the community forum, Emily Sims, children's and programming director at the Chelsea Library, announced the kickoff of the toddler story time and the reboot of the 1,000 books before kindergarten program.
Fire Chief Joe Lee said things at the department are getting to a new normal and the department will be hydrant testing for the next few months.
Mayor Picklesimer reported that Chelsea is still in third place in Shelby County for the census at 80.8%. For those who still haven’t filled out the census, it can be done online at 2020census.gov.
