More than 2,300 Chelsea residents turned out to vote in the Aug. 23 municipal elections, and the race for mayor will go into a run-off election between Dale Neuendorf and Tony Picklesimer.
Picklesimer received 1,100 votes, Neuendorf received 761 and Alison Moore Nichols received 452 in Tuesday's vote. Both Neuendorf and Picklesimer said their teams and families plan to take a short break from campaigning before hitting the ground running for the run-off, which will be held Oct. 4.
Picklesimer said he was excited to receive the number of votes he did, and he said that a run-off was something he expected to occur.
"I'm very proud to get 1,100 votes," he said. "I’m extremely proud of that. Our team worked so hard, and we ran a very positive campaign, and it was a campaign that was built on issues and solutions, and obviously Chelsea responded, they responded in a big way. It is very hard to win a three person race outright, but we came very close.”
Neuendorf said he is proud to continue to represent Chelsea as one of the candidates in the run-off, and he hopes to see voters come out to the polls in October.
"I'm very optimistic and proud that we're in the runoff because that was our objective tonight, was to make the runoff and get into that so that we have the chance to fight another day," he said. "I'm a little disappointed that there's so much spread in the votes as there are, but that's just what the reality is."
Neuendorf added that he is "extremely optimistic that this can be turned around."
