11 people were named as inaugural members of the newly formed Chelsea Park & Rec Board at the Jan. 7 Chelsea City Council meeting.
Mayor Tony Picklesimer said the decision was made to create this volunteer board to serve as the eyes and ears for the park and recreation department and to give the citizens a voice to make recommendations.
Resolutions were made to appoint the following individuals to the board: Bart Pettus, David Ingram, Casey Morris, David Burton, Melissa Townsend, Jason Rudakas, Joseph Palladino, Rachel Trice, Todd Walker, Jonathan Gill and John Chamblee.
“Let me be the first to thank these people for serving on the inaugural park and rec board,” Picklesimer said. “It is very important to all of us to get input from the citizens to help us have a better organization, and I am appreciative of the willingness of these people to volunteer their time.”
The council also passed a resolution to provide a specific firefighter comprehensive cancer policy. Fire Chief Wayne Shirley said that carcinogens produced from smoke from fires increase the chances of firefighters having cancer related sickness and deaths. A state law was passed that went into effect Jan. 1 that firefighters be covered by a specific cancer policy that goes over and above workers compensation. The $3174 annual premium will cover all 16 full-time Chelsea firefighters for the calendar year.
An resolution was also passed to consent to improvements at the intersection of County Road 47 & County Road 39 by Shelby County. This project has been in the works for sometime and this resolution takes care of the property donated to the project in front of City Hall.
“We are glad to see this project finally coming to fruition,” Picklesimer said. “Once the surveyors get out here, dirt will be moving soon.”
