Shelby County Commission meeting 022519
The Shelby County Commission approved a bid for the traffic signal installation in Chelsea, at the intersection of County Road 11 and Old Highway 280, to Stone and Sons Electrical Contractors at its Feb. 25 meeting.
The temporary light already in place has helped ease traffic flow at the intersection. County Engineer Randy Cole said since the resolution was approved the poles for the permanent light will be ordered this week, and once they arrive, work will begin on the project. It is expected to cost $108,474.00.
“It will take weeks to get it installed,” Cole said. “It will be a very nice mast arm installation with no wires strung across to avoid high voltage wires already in place. We will get it done as fast as we possibly can.”
Shelby County Chief Financial Officer Cheryl Naugher also gave a four-month financial update on the general fund, proprietary fund and other fund revenues at the commission meeting. Comparing the budget to actual differences, the expenditure budget will not have to be amended for adjustments.
“We use conservative principals from previous years based on budgets,” she said.
Cole gave a report on the floodplain audit that was done last week. These community assistance visits (CAVs) are done every five years to ensure flood damage prevention ordinances are in line with the FEMA flood program, which allows citizens to get flood insurance. He said the meeting went well and had a great outcome.
“They met with us for two hours and were extremely impressed with our staff, GIS system and record keeping,” Cole said. “I don’t think they could have been more pleased.”
He added that the county will be asked to adopt a new flood ordinance before the end of the year to include new definitions and map boundaries.
Due to the recent amount of rain, part of the road at Lakeview Circle and Highway 25 had to be closed off after part of the highway sloughed off. Cole said once the area dries out, the county will make the repairs.
Other resolutions approved include:
- A bid from Zuercher Technologies for a new public safety/software system. The software project addresses the records management, jail management and field-based reporting system specifications for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
- The incorporation of the Shelby County Public Building Authority and appointment of Trey Gauntt, Christie Pannell-Hester and Cheryl Naugher as directors of the Shelby County Public Building Authority. Gauntt’s term will end April 1, 2020, Pannell-Hester’s in 2022 and Naugher’s in 2024.
- Appointment of Don Thornton to the Law Enforcement Personnel Board to fill the unexpired term of Chris Lewis, which expires September 2021.
- A voting location change in Harpersville from the town hall to the community center.
The next commission meeting will take place March 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the Shelby County Administration Building in Columbiana.
