On May 20, the residents of Eagle Point celebrated the Class of 2020 by hosting a senior parade. The event was a way for the neighborhood and community to come together and celebrate over 70 seniors from Oak Mountain High School.
The idea originated when some Eagle Point moms wanted a way to celebrate the seniors in the neighborhood, since so many senior celebrations and traditions were cancelled due to COVID-19.
Maryjane Herring, whose son Griffin is in the OMHS senior class, and Tonja Sims, mom of Jordan Sims, helped coordinate the event.
At first, they thought there wouldn’t be an in-person graduation, so this would be a way to honor them. When it was decided the graduation ceremonies would take place after all, it was decided the parade would still go on.
An announcement was posted on the Eagle Point Facebook page, inviting all seniors to sign-up for the parade. Graduates were also allowed to invite other senior friends to ride along with them in the parade.
Oak Mountain SGA President Ryan Hall said he was really excited about the parade, because it's never been done before.
"I thought it was an awesome idea to bring us together," he said. "When this was planned, we didn't know we were going to have a graduation. We were all really excited to come together and show our colors and share our accomplishments together. Being able to drive through the neighborhood and having all that support means a lot."
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department served as parade escorts through the neighborhood.
The seniors decorated their cars and wore their cap and favorite senior shirt. At the end of the parade, they posed in front of the fire truck for a photo op.
Oak Mountain High School will hold gradation at 7 p.m. Monday, June 1 at Heardmont Stadium.
