Oak Mountain Mission is preparing for their annual “Christmas at the Mission,” a program to help Shelby County families in need during the holidays.
The non-profit agency needs new toys and gifts for children and teens, along with items to keep adults and children warm, including winter coats, blankets and portable heaters.
“Sadly, many families don’t have heat in their homes so they need essential items to keep themselves and their children warm,” said Roddy Cooper, Director of Oak Mountain Mission.
Along with providing basic necessities such as food, clothing and household items, Oak Mountain Mission also works to spread joy and love at Christmas.
“Christmas at the Mission provides an opportunity for parents to select toys and gifts for their children,” said Cooper. “All families are screened and Shelby county parents of children, ages infant through high school, schedule appointments to select gifts.
Last year, through the support of churches, businesses and individuals, the Mission provided Christmas gifts for 450 children, but Cooper said that need is expected to grow.
The greatest needs are for new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children and teens ages 1-17, along with gift cards.
“With the generosity of others, we want to give the gift of hope and love for children and their parents this Christmas,” Cooper said.
Donations are tax deductible and may be brought to the Mission by Dec. 12 Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oak Mountain Mission is located at 2699 Pelham Parkway. To learn more about the Mission go to www.oakmtnmissions.com or call 205-685-5757.
