Indian Springs School is offering fresh grown vegetables to the public.
The school’s Fertile Minds Learning Garden is run by Garden Director and Biology teacher Bob Pollard. Normally, students work in the garden throughout the year to produce more than 30 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables that are used in meals prepared by the school’s Dining Hall and sold to the public at a summer farm stand.
However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, Pollard is managing the garden largely on his own without student assistance.
Through the Garden, students get a firsthand look at where their food comes from and also explore the benefits of finding chemical-free solutions to agricultural issues such as soil health and pest control.
Pollard said, “It’s learning through living at its best.”
Available items include yellow squash, zucchini, green beans, red Russian kale, collards, green cabbage, Lacinato Italian kale, banana peppers, basil, eggs, Patty Pan squash, dragon tongue beans, rosemary, garlic, heirloom tomatoes, green bell peppers and purple bell peppers.
Orders must be placed online using a credit card between Monday at 9 a.m. and Thursday at 9 p.m.
Although the campus remains closed, customers can go directly to the garden to pick up their order while remaining in their vehicles on Fridays from noon to 6 p.m.
Any produce not sold during the week is donated to a Birmingham food bank.
Indian Springs School is located off U.S. 119 at 190 Woodward Dr, Pelham. To place an order, visit https://indiansprings.myschoolapp.com/page/support-springs/school-store.
