Oak Mountain State Park will host "Burrows & Biodiversity: Gopher Tortoise Program & Encounter" on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 1-2 p.m. at the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center.
The program explores the life of the gopher tortoise, its importance to Alabama's longleaf pine ecosystems and the vital role the species plays in supporting biodiversity. Through stories, observation and hands-on learning, participants will discover why conserving these slow-moving reptiles is essential to the health of their habitat.
Guests will also have the opportunity to meet a live gopher tortoise and learn more about the animal from park educators.
The program is free with paid admission to Oak Mountain State Park and for overnight guests.
